so, right now, i'm typing with my monitor, mouse, and keyboard all plugged into my powerbook because i hate typing on laptops.

why am i using this setup?

because my computer is momentarily down...

why is my computer momentarily down?

because i tried taking off the after-market vga cooler (the accelero x2) by heating it with a blowdrier, to no avail, and freezing it, also to no avail. so, i used a razor blade to try slicing the little sticky pads that are on the ram modules. i got most of them... so, i pulled and twisted. nothing, but i got a little movement. so, i used some force... viola! a broken x1900xt... busted off two of the ram modules... they remained stuck to the cooler. fvcking neat.

so, i overnighted myself a graphics card from newegg and it should be here tomorrow...

that damn cooler does NOT detach... avoid it like the plague. go with a zalman or thermaltake if you want an after-market cooler.

edited for those who didn't read past the op before replying:
i took the cooler off so i could put the stock cooler on so it'd fit in my new case... the apevia xqpack. sigh.

dude take pictures and email them to me.. I might take that card off of your hands. bclark22@gmail.com

I might be able to solder those ram modules back on depending on how complex it is

i'll try to get pics...

edit: nevermind... can't take pics. if you want the card, start digging through some st. louis county trash dump.

lol damn.. yeah i imagine it would be quite complex to solder on some new ram chips but i figured it would be worth a try if it looked good in pictures.

you wouldn't be able to solder them... the little threads were sticking out all over the place.

if it's under warranty, replace them.

they were in the trash and the trash guy came by this afternoon... so...

also, i'm pretty sure physical damage isn't covered under warranty.

well, that vga cooler was at its fault for pulling the memory modules out.

So you recommend not buying one because you couldn't take it off without damaging your graphics card because it was meant to be stuck on there with a firm grip so it wouldn't come off? Wow.

"wow" what? yeah. that's exactly right. why "wow"?

go do a google search for all the people who've had problems taking this cooler off their card... THEN come back and try to be a dick.

A guy over in ocforums said the solder melted on his and the sink fell off the card...how fvcking hot did it have to get to melt the solder? I mean...wouldn't the entire graphics card have melted into a puddle of plastic first?

Anyway, I never bought the accelero because it doesn't exhaust out of the case.

So despite the fact that you knew there was still sticky pads attached, and there was the possibility of damaging it, you went ahead and ripped it off? It's not like a stock heatsink+cooler that's meant to be easily removed. But ok, lets blame the cooler on your video card being damaged. Ignore all common sense!

Sounds like user error to me. Since the beginning of time, manufacturers have shipped their heatsinks with pre-applied thermal pastes and pads. These often contain adhesives. If you want an easy removal of the heastsink later on, remove the pre-applied stuff and add your own thermal compound that lacks strong adhesive properties.

And when you are trying to remove an adhesive thermal compound, use a strong solvent.

Wasn?t it in the documentation that it is not recommended that you take it off? Meaning that if you put it on, you better not take it off.

btw, how is that new case working out for you? :D

common sense tells you that if you have most of sticky pads detached, when you twist, force would detach the other pads because the pads should have a weaker bond than the ram chips have with the card. common sense doesn't tell you that an after-market heatsink will be virtually superglued to your ram chips.

just leave the thread... seriously.
