My view and hope is that user base willing to pay for a la carte content will hit critical mass, and content creators will find it equally or more profitable to offer their services on places like Hulu, etc.
In the past year i've grown to dislike the telco companies. It's amazing how easily americans are parted with their money. These companies like cell phone carriers and network operators want to charge you more for more use, in some cases where more use doesn't really cost them more. They should charge by amount of data used, that makes sense, but why should I have to pay for text messages in tiers of use? Why should I pay money for tethering ON TOP of my "unlimited" data plan?
Why shouldn't I unlock the device I pay for, when it cost them the same to manufacture, and the R&D costs are the same, just that the company purposely crippled their product so they could sell it for lower cost and charge more for the one that is not crippled?
Why should I pay $500 for a phone that only works on one carrier? They have all these network incompatibilities such that if you want to switch most of the time you need a new phone.
All these things are just the few I could think of off the top of my head, and it's undemocratic in a way. We are supposed to be the great democracy of current times, yet we let our government be corrupted by the dollars these big companies contribute to their campaigns and shady deals. We should be voting with our dollars when they try to shaft us like this, but instead of not standing up for ourselves, we for some reason think that we have to accept the giant shit these companies are taking on us, and shell out our cash for it.
The situation is literally that the companies charge whatever they can get away with, so consumers are enabling their ridiculous shenanigans. I've realized a lot of this in the past year and canceling cable was part of my effort to be more democratic, and vote with my dollars.
P.S. I don't care about sports, I didn't realize it was such a big deal for some people. Despite my above rant, I think it's fine to pay for something if you feel you are getting appropriate value for your money. In my case I didn't feel i was, since I mainly watched just a handful of shows on HBO/SHO, and the rest of the channels I watched were just to veg out and kill time, I was paying just so I could watch those shows during the current season. Most of that stuff is on netflix for a small monthly fee if you're willing to be a year behind in the seasons. That totally jives with me since I like discovering a show and then doing a marathon where I burn through 4-5 seasons of the DVD's in a few short weeks.
I don't think I will stop ranting about this for a while.
