If you live in a city like Seattle that has horrible local pro teams, no NBA franchise, lackluster college sports and so on, how do you follow other teams across the country?

You do like I do and only watch when the team you root for is on TV

Little simplistic to say all pro games are on broadcast. Just the local team if they sell out or are away. Then the networks will show 1 - 2 additional games, though they might not be the best ones on.

If you live in a city like Seattle that has horrible local pro teams, no NBA franchise, lackluster college sports and so on, how do you follow other teams across the country? Not like they preempt a Mariners game to show the Braves or Cardinals.

Well obviously the sports packages are a different story - its not like you're getting other cities' local sports in even the premium cable packages. However, some of them (MLB and NBA, most notably) offer their sports package in an online form as well, so you aren't completely lost without it. Sunday Ticket is exclusive to DirecTV, so most people don't have access to that wtih their service anyway.

NHL as well. Center Ice is available online.

Also, another thing for those who are considering cable (or directtv) for the nfl, you can sign up for NFL game rewind. The games aren't live (although they might incorporate that in the future, they have a live preseason package) and are delayed by a day.

But you can watch every game, and they archive the games for 2 years, I believe.

It's $40 right now, and is a great deal if live games aren't that important to you.

Hey now we have one good team! The Sounders FC! Sell out every game ( 36k+) and are in the run for playoffs and open cup/Champions League.

Theres always ways and sacrifices people will make. I am fine watching my soccer a day late since most of it is on super early in the morning for me anyways (Euro soccer). American sport wise, besides the MLS, only game i watch is the superbowl.

Yeah TV has been pretty much fail for me for like 10 years. A few shows come along that are good like 24 and The Unit which could be watched online. And just sitting watching garbage on TV or channel surfing is more of a waste of time than ATOT even! :)

Only have cable internet. In college we usually had basic cable because it was about the same price per month with or without.

24 and The Unit are on basic television..

Wow, what city do you live in? What company? I paid 130 and that was for one DVR box, and did not include phone or internet. It's expensive where I am.

cable tv would be so much more tolerable if there was an a la carte option.

it would be tolerable for a month, and then every station except the ones airing Jersey Shore and American Idol will go out of business.

Cable (Internet, HD, 2 HD-DVRs, HBO, a sports package) costs me like 180/month. It's expensive.. but I watch a lot of TV.. it's almost always on in the background when I'm doing other things.

I am also in the 'haven't watched live TV in years' camp. I like the 'pick two shows, spend the next three months going through the past six-seasons for those two shows' approach. Sure, you're behind the curve and miss out on lots of pop-culture references and ATOT episode discussion threads but I just don't have the time to keep up with TV.

I need to start watching 24 and Prison Break soon. Yes, that's how far behind I am. But my viewing habits don't represent that of a million others. To each their own.

I pay about $170 a month for Digital Cable, HD, DVR, Internet and Phone and it kills me to pay it every month but when you think about it, having 5 TVs in the house, 3 or 4 that are on constantly, 4 computers in the house that get used 24-7 and 2 kids who talk with friends on the phone for hours at a time that would be long distance on another phone plan it suddenly seems like a pretty good deal.....

Bullshit. Comedy Central would do just fine. Plenty of other channels, too.

One day late in sports is already too late. All your friends are talking about it and you are going to hear about it on the news/radio before you get to watch it. Sports is always something that needs to be seen live or not at all. No sane person would watch day late football.

There's plenty of people who dvr their games in the first place and watch it later anyway.

No, it's not ideal yet, but it is an option. Besides, if you live in the market for your favorite team (like I do), you can watch all the games for free except for those that are on espn or Nfl network.

Besides, it'll be nice to see some games that I otherwise wouldn't be able to get, even if it is a day late.

My view and hope is that user base willing to pay for a la carte content will hit critical mass, and content creators will find it equally or more profitable to offer their services on places like Hulu, etc.

In the past year i've grown to dislike the telco companies. It's amazing how easily americans are parted with their money. These companies like cell phone carriers and network operators want to charge you more for more use, in some cases where more use doesn't really cost them more. They should charge by amount of data used, that makes sense, but why should I have to pay for text messages in tiers of use? Why should I pay money for tethering ON TOP of my "unlimited" data plan?

Why shouldn't I unlock the device I pay for, when it cost them the same to manufacture, and the R&D costs are the same, just that the company purposely crippled their product so they could sell it for lower cost and charge more for the one that is not crippled?

Why should I pay $500 for a phone that only works on one carrier? They have all these network incompatibilities such that if you want to switch most of the time you need a new phone.

All these things are just the few I could think of off the top of my head, and it's undemocratic in a way. We are supposed to be the great democracy of current times, yet we let our government be corrupted by the dollars these big companies contribute to their campaigns and shady deals. We should be voting with our dollars when they try to shaft us like this, but instead of not standing up for ourselves, we for some reason think that we have to accept the giant shit these companies are taking on us, and shell out our cash for it.

The situation is literally that the companies charge whatever they can get away with, so consumers are enabling their ridiculous shenanigans. I've realized a lot of this in the past year and canceling cable was part of my effort to be more democratic, and vote with my dollars.

P.S. I don't care about sports, I didn't realize it was such a big deal for some people. Despite my above rant, I think it's fine to pay for something if you feel you are getting appropriate value for your money. In my case I didn't feel i was, since I mainly watched just a handful of shows on HBO/SHO, and the rest of the channels I watched were just to veg out and kill time, I was paying just so I could watch those shows during the current season. Most of that stuff is on netflix for a small monthly fee if you're willing to be a year behind in the seasons. That totally jives with me since I like discovering a show and then doing a marathon where I burn through 4-5 seasons of the DVD's in a few short weeks.

I don't think I will stop ranting about this for a while.

Hooked up my antenna and I get all the major channels. Unfortunately, I don't get KMSP (channel 9) in HD, only SD, and it took a lot of antenna wrangling to get KARE-11 working right. But at least I have all the major channels, and the quality of KMSP is pretty good considering it's SD.

The weird thing is I thought my antenna was UHF-only, so it shouldn't really be picking up KARE-11 at all, unless channel 11 is close enough to the UHF range that I just barely get it. That would explain the trouble I had picking it up. KMSP-SD is actually channel 29, remapped to 9-2, which is why I get it without problems.

I wish broadcasters would just drop VHF entirely. I don't want to have to get bunny ears.

I recently moved and opted to skip cable and just get a fast internet connection... my free time at home I'd rather spend surfin the web than watching tv, so why pay an extra $50 bucks or so... at my last place I was paying $100 for cable and internet but rarely watched the tv, except for a few shows on the dvr. I just hooked up my tv using a coat hanger antenna to get local channels so I can watch the news, etc.

It sounds like you are using some sort of hdtv antenna... but have you heard of the coat hanger antenna? I built one and it works fabulously. It is this:

I built mine using copper wire, screws, and washers from the hardware store. Only cost about $30 bucks but you could do it alot less if you had some of the parts already. No more messing with rabbit ears for me.
