PS3 vs. XBox 360

I'll settle this debate. Get whatever your friends have so you can play together. I wanted a PS3 cus I'm a Metal Gear fanboi but got a 360 cus that's what all my friends have.

Pheran was just saying that the two series the OP mentioned have non-exclusive titles. You're reading way too much into what he said. Sorry if you think I try to "start something with you," I just get tired of the rabid fanboyism from some people on this forum, and I call it out when I see it.

You can go ahead and offer the OP some worthwhile advice whenever you feel like it...

I already had a blu-ray player when I made my choice, but went with the 360 because of price and it had the games I wanted to play. If I didn't have a blu-ray player, I probably would have still gone with the 360 for the same reasons. Blu-ray is awesome, but (to me) not a compelling enough reason to base a console choice on it.

Not trying to be rude but has this not been answered in one of the 300 other identically titled threads that's already been posted? Surely you already know the benefits of both, the only thing you're going to find in this thread is fanboi opinions. I'll say 360 because it's what I have and like, you'll do fine with either. You know what they both do.

I have both. The 360 is LOUD! Very noticeable in a smallish rooms. The PS3 is silent. Especially important if you like to watch movies....I can't watch a movie on the 360. The PS3 will stream Netflix, you just need to install the appropriate media sharing/streaming program on your PC (I use PlayOn). Is the 360 cheaper? You'll need to buy a bridge, the PS3 has one bult in (and a good one I might add). And, of course, it is a blu ray player and good blu ray stand alones are almost as expensive as the PS3. On the plus side, I like all the game choices on the 360, especially Live! arcade. You really need both machines. 😀 If I had to choose one I'd go PS3 because of all the media streaming I do and I think the 360 is too loud for that.

Different tastes I suppose, I had 2 360s when I got my PS3, ended up trading one of my 360s for a 2nd PS3. I guess since I don't play online much, maybe that's a factor that I'm not really affected by.

My PS3 is pretty loud sometimes, when the fans cut on for a bit. Not sure why they come on when I'm watching a movie or streaming DiVX, it's kind of weird, but whatever, yeah, then it's not silent by any means.

But yeah, my 360 is a train all the time, my wife hates it.

get both and have the best of two worlds.

then you won't have to try and justify your reasoning for buying one over the other on intenet forums.

Yeah, instead you can claim that your opinion of which system is better than the other system is validated because you own both. You can play both sides!

I think the loudness of the 360 varies pretty widely. I only ever notice the noise from mine if whatever I'm playing/watching is silent.

Re: media streaming -

- I much prefer the folder navigation on the PS3. On the 360 if you're scrolling through a long list it will "accelerate" to the point of scrolling TOO fast. I've gotten in the habit of letting off the stick right before it starts to scroll fast, otherwise it'll scroll right past what I'm looking for. It does backtrack after you stop scrolling, but I usually still go too far. The PS3 scrolls at a good speed. XBMC does too... not sure why MS can't get it right. On the downside, the PS3 won't loop around the list of files/folders you're scrolling through, so if the item you want is at the end you have to scroll all the way down. On the 360 you just push the stick up and it loops around to the end.

- The 360 lets you FF at various rates (2x, 4x, 8x, etc), or you can skip ahead to 9 or 10 different evenly spaced "chapter" breaks. That is useful for skipping through a large portion of a video. The PS3 lets you FF at different rates (1.5x, 10x, and some absurdly high speeds), and it has some relatively new feature that shows you thumbnails of upcoming scenes as you're fast-forwarding. I don't think they have added something similar to the 360's chapter breaks yet.

- I have had a lot of problems just getting the media streaming to work at all on the PS3. As far as I can tell my problems are not widespread, but they're not isolated either. Other people experience the same problems I do. Sometimes my PS3 finds my media server, sometimes it doesn't. If I try to search for media servers, it usually crashes my router (WRT54G). When it does work I get a lot of stuttering issues (the content I'm streaming is about 100 MB per 10 minutes of video - standard def, nothing crazy). I'm hoping some of the issues are wireless-related, though my laptops have no problem connecting to the wireless router from the same room. The PS3 reports that it has internet connectivity, it just has issues with uPnP for some reason. I have another router that I'm going to put DD-WRT or Tomato on and I'll put it on the same floor as the PS3 hoping that will fix the issue. The PS3 is in the only room that has a TV but no Ethernet - lack of Ethernet is why the PS3 is in that room to begin with, because it has wireless.

On the other hand, I occasionally (rarely) get an error on my Xbox 360 that says it can't play the file I've chosen, or that the connection to the server was lost. This happens when I'm trying to start playing a file, not when it's already playing. If I just try to play the file again, it always works the second time.

Really though, either one will do the job acceptably as long as you don't encounter the same issues that I have with the PS3 connecting to your uPnP media server.

I install the games to my 360 HDD and it's quiet as a mouse. The newer DVD drives are quieter than the originals as well. My old Zephyr sounded like a 747, the newer one is more like a Cessna.

Fixed 🙂.

IMO, neither is really much more expensive than the other for the full experience (goes for the Wii also). I have all three current-gen consoles, but I wouldn't have a 360 if all my friends and family didn't seem to end up with one. For me multiplayer with friends and family was key in my purchasing of the 360. Thankfully, I already had wired Ethernet to the installation location, and the Arcade 512MB (all of these are Jasper units) unit I ended up with has HDMI output, so I just needed a cheap cable to hook it up with. The wireless adapter and hard drive pricing for the 360 are completely insane. Completely insane I tell you! I bought a 120GB hard drive because I couldn't stand the DVD-ROM noise from the 360, and the best deal I could find was around $125 shipped to my doorstep. If you need 2/3 of these things (wireless adapter, hard drive, or something besides a HDMI cable to hook up the console), the PS3 is pretty much on price parity with the 360 when you figure in a year of XBox Live.

Now, concerning Live, it works out to about $3 and some change a month for a Gold account, and if you play lots of multiplayer games, it is well worth the price. Multiplayer on the PS3 is hit and miss and Live just works and works very well. IMO It feels like part of the package, rather than an afterthought like on the PS3. Also, if you have Netflix (I don't, so it's not really a consideration for me), I would think the integrated streaming would be a nice additional benefit over the PS3.

If you do mainly single player gaming, I'd give the slight nod (if you have a nice gaming PC, I'd give nearly a complete nod) to the PS3 though. Also, having Blu-ray playback is a huge plus for me, as the PS3 was my first stand-alone Blu-ray player in the house (oddly enough the PS2 was my first DVD player as well). This isn't as huge as it used to be, as I've added a nice HTPC with a Blu-ray drive in it, but it's still nice for the odd disc that doesn't like to play nice while having its DRM fiddled with.

Edit: Just noticed that you're into Final Fantasy. If you generally like JRPGs, I'd give the XBox 360 the nod for those. PS3 has either lost exclusivity with or pissed off a lot of their 3rd party developers, and the 360 exclusive role playing library just keeps expanding. I enjoy these types of games, and getting to play Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Mass Effect (I know ME is on the PC as well, but I had problems with the DRM awhile back, so I never really got to play it) is quite nice for me.

I think it's a ploy to get you to buy the 120GB hard drive model. My brand new 360 console's DVD drive is ridiculously loud compared to my PS3 or PC optical drives (I can't imagine how loud they used to be if this is an improvement). But yes, the install to hard drive option really does fix this issue quite nicely, as it just spins up to verify the disc and is quite as a mouse from thereafter.

I have zero issues with streaming media (on the PS3 and 360), and I honestly think it's because I use a wired connection. DLNA media servers are not created equally also. I use Tversity and have for over a year now without issues on the PS3 and for about a month on the 360. A bunch of my friends like using PlayOn and have very few to no issues with it as well.

I own both. I have about 50+ games for the 360, and more like 8 for the PS3. On the other hand, more than a few of those 360 games are also on the PS3, so those numbers are skewed a bit.

The "PS3 runs Linux" thing is basically worthless, because you only get 256mb of RAM and no graphical hardware acceleration. I installed it on there for the sake of doing it, and I never bothered booting into it again. I say this as a guy who actually prefers Linux as a desktop OS.

I generally give the 360 the overall nod, but if you absolutely require a console system that can do BR-D playback, which I can understand, the PS3 is a perfectly acceptable choice.

Most people don't have issues I think. I'm also using TVersity. I would much prefer to use a wired connection. First thing I did when I bought my house was run 4 Cat6 lines + phone and RG-6 for cable TV to all of the bedrooms except the master, the family room and the garage. Unfortunately it was darn near impossible to fish everything to the location in the master bedroom where the TV would go, so I gave up.

You guys tried out PS3 Media Server? At this point, it works with both consoles pretty well, although it's being coded mainly for PS3 owners. You can pick it up here. It has a small footprint on the PC, loads up as a service, and since installing it, I've uninstalled TVersity and haven't missed it in the least.

Not an attempt to highjack, I just thought I'd mention it.

That's why I went PS3.

Exactly, because Halo 3, Gears 2, Forza 2, Crackdown, and many other games are available for PC...

Wait, not they're not.

PC got Gears 1 what, a year or so after it came out on the 360? It got Halo 1 and 2, but not 3 (and it won't). I'm just trying to figure out how you all are playing these 360 exclusives on your PC's?

Both systems have their exclusives, timed or otherwise. There are a few games that only the 360 will get, there are some that 360 and PC will get, and there are some that all 3 will get.

I wouldn't be so sure you won't see Halo 3 on the PC at some point.

Just sayin'. Gears 2, I'm going to say no, and the Crackdown boat has sailed, but Halo 3...well, I wouldn't nail the coffin quite yet.

Yeah, I guess it's possible. Still, considering that if it does come out it'll be more than 2 years behind the 360 version you might as well chock that up as "360 exclusive" for a 2 year wait.
