PS3 vs. XBox 360

jhu

Lifer
I probably have it good seeing as this is currently my most major decision right now. But anyway here are some pros I've come up with for these consoles:

PS3:
1) PS3 exclusive games (Katamari, Metal Gear)
2) Blu-Ray
3) Can run Linux

XBox 360
1) XBox 360 exclusive games (Halo, Gears of War)
2) A lot less espensive

I'm kind of leaning towards XBox and getting a Blu-ray player down the road. I already have enough Linux machines at home, but it might be entertaining to run it on a console for laughs. I've heard the next Final Fantasy iteration will be available on the XBox 360 as well, and if so that might be the deal maker.

I prefer PS3 exclusive franchises: LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Resistance, God of War, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS, and inFamous.

Man, such great games.

I love my PS3, but ultimately it comes down to which console exclusive games you want to play. For me it was a no brainer. PS3 all the way. But both consoles are overall very similar.

I put linux on my PS3... booted into it one time, and that was it.

Other things to consider -
Do you plan on playing online? That'll run you $30+ per year on the Xbox, but you also need to consider whether any of your friends play online with either console
Do you need wifi? That'll run you $75+ on the 360 for a USB wireless adapter or ~$30 for a wireless bridge.
Do you prefer either controller over the other? Some people care about that more than others; personally, I buy almost all games for one console because I prefer the controller so much over the other.

Really, the cost of the games is going to outweigh the cost of the console in the long run.

Don't forget to have your coffins ready. BTW, if you have a gaming-capable PC, then you already have an XBOX 360.

Blu Ray and built-in WiFi were pretty big sellers for me on the PS3. I could go 50/50 on the game libraries honestly. Also take a look at what Live vs PSN offers. I love the games offered on PSN (play them more than my PS3 library). Some of the exclusives are great, but then I often get jealous when cool titles are released only on XBLA. 😛

360's price is hard to beat
360 controller is more comfortable in my opinion
XBL(A) > PSN
PS3's built-in wifi is good (but if you don't mind wiring, this becomes a moot point)
PS3 has blu-ray
PS3 is more reliable (than the old models of the 360 - the new ones are hard to beat)

Price:
There is a rumor of a PS3 price drop next month, and as noted $30 of the difference goes to Live Gold and if you want wifi another $30-75 goes to a bridge or wifi adapter. If you can qualify for the Sony/Chase CC at SonyStyle.com you can erase the difference right now, then come out ahead on the Live and wifi. Of course there are 360 Hot Deals down to $250 now and then too...

Movies:
Blu-ray is great, the visuals in Watchmen for example look very nice in 1080. But the 360 has Netflix streaming which is nice too.

Online:
$30 a year, but more players and probably most of your friends are on xbox live.

Exclusives:
Some 360 exclusives like Mass Effect also are on the PC, so if you have a decent gaming PC keep that in mind. If you like online shooters the 360 does have the biggest console exclusives (Halo, Gears).

Cross-platform
360 does still have an edge in visual quality over PS3 in most games, though PC wins over consoles with even a $100 video card now.

So:
- for multiplayer online shooters the 360 at $300 + $30 Live is the winner, adding a $200 blu-ray player for movies later on.
- otherwise, that depends on the controller you like, what exclusives you care about, and how much value you see in blu-ray.

My vote: "it depends."

Eh, Netflix streaming kind of sealed the deal. Plus all my friends have 360's.

If you plan on playing multiplayer, ask what your friends have.

I have both.

I use my PS3 more as I don't care for FPS on consoles.

360 has good arcade games and I enjoy playing them but the exclusives are pretty weak IMO.

Not sure what you mean about Katamari being a PS3 exclusive, you can get Beautiful Katamari on the 360. For that matter, Metal Gear Solid: Rising is also coming out on the 360, so your exclusives aren't very exclusive. 🙂

MGS: Rising isnt even close to MGS4. Dont try to compare the two.

No.

I think what he is saying, is that a lot of big MS exclusives, come out to the PC, some to the PS3. Halo 1&2, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Lost Planet, etc.

/me waits for this to spiral into a fanboy flamewar.

Personally, I like the PS3 better. Microsoft obviously has a lock on accessibility when it comes to online gaming, but since 90% of my online gaming is PC based, that's not really a concern to me. The PS3 just feels like a more solid, well thought out machine.

Price wise, when you look at what you get with a $350-$400 PS3 out of the box, compared to what you'll end up spending trying to get a $200 Xbox 360 to a level where it can fully make use of things like Netflix, DLC, XBLA, online gaming, etc., there really is no price difference. You need a hard drive, you likely need wireless (at least in my experience with people who have bought 360s and then wanted to get online later), you pay $30, give or take, up front for a year or multiplayer access. When you spend the money to get a $200 360 up to the level of even a 40GB PS3, you've usually eclipsed $400 easily.

Both systems have strengths, both have weaknesses. The 360 adopted an online strategy that in a lot of way separates the haves from the have-nots, while the PS3's online infrastructure still needs some (ok, a lot of) work. The 360 historically has been a less reliable machine. MS has made up for that with some pretty generous warranty coverage, but you're still looking at potential downtime. The PS3 seems more reliable, but nothing is 100%, and their warranty coverage and length is decidedly less.

I think in the end, it'll come down to: 1.) do you have friends who play console games online, and what console do they have, 2.) How important is downloadable content, now or in the future, 3.) what kinds of games do you like, fps, fighting, survival horror, puzzle, rpg, etc., 4.) and would you rather deal with potential downtime or a paying up for issues that arise after a year of console life.

I do have both systems myself, and for me, if I'm going to buy a multiplatform game, unless it's horribly crippled on the PS3 somehow, I'll buy it there. The only game that's been the situation for has been Fallout 3, and I bought that on the PC anyway.

360 controller is more comfortable in my opinion I agree with this, but it's not a huge difference for me personally

XBL(A) > PSN Definitely, but you pay a fee to really utilize that, which may or may not be a hindrance for some people, although, if it is, they're pretty not going to be ponying up for a $400 PS3 in the first place.

PS3's built-in wifi is good (but if you don't mind wiring, this becomes a moot point) Most people I know on either platform that go online utilize wi-fi

PS3 has blu-ray Yep. Of course, this may not factor in for a lot of people, since the adoption of HD is still very much in the minority, and least in the U.S.

PS3 is more reliable (than the old models of the 360 - the new ones are hard to beat) I have a friend who had a Falcon die on him, regardless, yeah, the newer ones seem to be a lot more reliable.

He's probably referring to other titles like the Motorstorm, Uncharted, Rachet and Clank, Killzone, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, Infamous, Hot Shots Golf, Gran Turismo, God of War and a few other pretty notable Sony only franchises.

Microsoft has some great exclusives tho like the Gears of War, Fable, Halo, Left 4 Dead (except on PC), Forza, and the latest Splinter Cell, and they also have the Rock Band user creator's content stuff coming.

I think you can look at both platforms and easily say they have some damned good exclusive based content on their belt. Makes me really glad I own both 🙂.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. I have a feeling I'm going to be getting an XBox 360 then.

Just a note, as far as I know, Katamari Forever has only been announced as a PS3 title. It may come to the 360 at some point, but right now I believe there's only a PS3 version in the works.

I'm curious to see what type of game MGS: Rising is going to be. My gut tells me it's going be a more action, first or 3rd person shooterish type game, not really like MGS4, but I guess only time will tell. As a huge MGS4 fan, I would hope they keep that format and just tell a new story with it.

If that's the case, get 360 now and get PS3 when it price drops. I am not a fan of 360 reliability and craftsmanship though.

You're the first person in this thread who said anything about MGS4. 😕

Thanks for all your input. I'm not really in a hurry and can wait for price drops.

After some more reading, one other thing going for the PS3 is that replacing hard drives is much easier and cheaper than XBox 360.

MGS: Rising was never an exclusive. So one can only think he was linking it to the MGS franchise, which has always been a Sony exclusive. Including MGS4. See, its not that hard if you try. But you always try to start something with me. 🙂
