Sony will obviously try their best to catch the upcoming holiday season. That is when 50% of all videogames are sold, during those couple of months. If you miss that date, there goes half of your year's earnings.

I think analysts have a late spring release for PS3 in Japan with a fall release for the US and Europe. Guess we'll find out soon though.

Yep, and Kotaku.com is slow to non-existent with the updates. Gizmodo.com got locked out of the presser too.

If they can't make this holiday season, then the next season would make sense (you want the hype to peak during that buying season).

The problem is that the Xbox2 will already have a foothold by then.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz, a detachable 2.5 inch HDD slot, six usb 2.0 ports, Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, a compact flash memory slot, Compact flash slot, 2 hdmi outputs, 1 av multi out, 1 SPDIF optical output, and 1-gigabit Ethernet built in port

The PS3 will be a backwards compatible console that goes far to match if not suceed all of the multimedia capabilities of the Xbox 360.

what's the point of dual HDMI outputs? (i'm sure there is one i'm just not thinking of any right now)

Sounds on par with the Xbox360 minus all the memory format slots.

I hope that's not the real design they're showing on engadget, because it's pretty ugly.

edit: ok, real system shot is up. looks a bit better...

One for a local screen say plasma, lcd, crt etc and then one on to a big projector. Saves people the hassle of getting a box to split the feed up.

As long as it has one I am happy :)

this is really impressive:

The nVidia graphics will be called the RSX (?Reality Synthesizer?), and will trump the Xbox 360 with 1080p (yes, that?s a p) graphics support.

Great so we know it's fast, and looks ok. Oh and games should look good too, Big deal.
Launch with a remake of FFVI & FFVII and I'll buy it.

Since it will be coming out almost a year after the Xbox360, that makes perfect sense.

I'd almost call it overkill since 1080p displays haven't even made it to market yet and won't be mainstream for quite a while.

"Square Enix has just shown off a Final Fantasy VII tech demo for the PlayStation 3, but they did not announce a specific game for it. Yet."

:Q FFVII on PS3 = Printing money. Sure hope they do.

1080p is great.

It will just give more room for when people have a 1080p display and then make it look STUNNING.

Overkill for now? Sure but not in 3-4yrs imo and I'd rather have 1080p then 1080i or 720p given any options :D

You don't know that for sure. This is Microsoft you're talking about, and they never make their release dates. Heck, they said the Xbox360 was going to support HDDVD, and the 45 GB verison hasn't been approved yet.
Somethings gotta give!
