PS3 and ext usb drives

is there a way ps3 can read drives with ntfs partition? i'm trying to copy a file that is over 4 gigs to a usb drive, but it's capped by fat32 file system. i didn't realize the ps3 couldn't read ntfs until i repartitioned a drive from fat32 to ntfs, at which point the ps3 stopped recognizing the drive.

The PS3 can't read NTFS external drives, but you can transfer the file. Do a search for Red Kawa File Server and large files.

I also ran into the same problem the OP came across... it sux, but set aside an extra drive for your ps3. if you can afford to of course.

It's why using a NAS/Media Server is the best way to share large files with the PS3. As long as the host computer can read the format, you're good.

thx for the info guys.
too bad the comp is running xp pro and has no media server capabilities... maybe windows 7 is in order soon.

XP Pro will work just fine. Windows Media Player has DNLA media server capabilities or you can install one of many available DNLA media servers like "PS3 Media Server", "TVersity", or "PlayOn". Just about any will work fine for basic streaming.

Considering NTFS is a Microsoft technology, I highly doubt Sony would go out of their way to provide support for it. 😉

Yeah, so they support FAT...another Microsoft developed technology.

Yeah, having finally tried it, that's where my vote goes.

That's virtually unavoidable though. Just about every thumb or external drive on the market comes formatted with FAT. Not supporting FAT would result in thousands of customers trying to figure out why none of their devices are readable.

I ran into this issue as well. I wanted to transfer a 24GB HD movie file to my PS3 and there is absolutely no way to do it with physical media. The only way to do it would be copying it from a network share. Ick.

You don't know what you're talking about. It's because FAT licensing is very cheap, less than $1 per unit. NTFS is more expensive and still tightly controlled by Microsoft.

I'm lost as to how that has anything to do with what I said.

I concur.

I was using a DLNA compliant NAS directly before until sony broke that working with the last firmware update, then I was using Tversity but since I tried PS3 Media Server, I haven' looked back. Just very simple and just works.

ps3 media server is indeed cool!

however, it seems the wi-fi connection is limiting playback of 1080p files.. lots of stuttering.
i've tried some of the options in the program but no success. is wired connection the only way to go?

I tried wireless once and got the same thing. I just don't think wireless can be counted on for large movies. I wire everything when possible. Any way you can make a run through an attic space?
