<< Congrats and nice interest rate, I always thought rates were higher. >>
Say hello to the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. Who says military service doesn't have its benefits?? I was VERY happy when they gave me that interest rate -- I expected at least half a point higher. I may have to refinance my wife's car through them, even though it would be considered used at this point. Of course, I think I may try to swing some protection from the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act and try for a 6% interest rate, since the debt was incurred prior to my active duty service. I am not sure that would work though, as it seems like a sneaky way of locking in a tremendously low rate. Can't hurt to write a letter though. >>
Actually you may have luck with the SSCRA. The main problem some creditors have with it is that the law as written contemplates that your ability to pay is limited by your service (when in reality the opposite is often true). That said, I have had very good luck with it, and even had student lenders reduce my rate to 6% gratuitously (student loans are expressly excluded from the SSCRA, but I did not know this at the time, and apparently neither did my lenders!). As you said, it is probably worth a shot in any event.
Make sure to get USAA insurance - they are AMAZING (I could tell you some stories, but suffice it to say I have tried their patience through my repeated victimization by Okie thieves, and they have always been fantastic, and their rates are very good as well).
