I just found out that the credit union approved my vehicle loan (6.49% :Q) for the brand new 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab that is sitting in my garage. 4.7L V8, CD with Infinity sound system, 16in tires, dark green, power locks/windows/keyless entry -- a HUGE improvement over the POS '89 VW Fox that's sitting in front with its muffler dangling a couple inches above the ground! :D

My first new car -- I'm excited! I also saved about $3000 by taking advantage of employee pricing, which helped a great deal.

Now I just have to deal with TWO car payments... :)

Sounds kinda like the ride I'm gonna be getting in a couple months (I have 3k of the 5k down payment that I'm going for)

What I'm going for:
Dakota Club cab
4.7 V8 w/ 5 speed manual
2wd w/ wheel and tire package
towing package
AC
limited slip diff

I wanted to put a higher down payment down, but my car died not too long ago. The hassle of juggling one car was just too much, and the $2000 rebate on the Dakotas ended on the 3rd. Just in case they would pull or reduce that rebate, I went ahead and dropped the money down.

I had to buy the Quad Cab to placate the wife about car seats and our future family. I didn't want an SUV because I thought the 5.5' bed would be more useful.

I'm just loving the 230 horses. That's almost three times more than I had in my Fox! :)

Congrats. Just got a new Rodeo with 0% financing for 60 months myself.

Can someone explain to me why trucks are so popular? I can understand if you live in the country, but it's kinda rough hauling passengers in a flatbed, right? :)

Oh, I just noticed you've got the new 4.7L V8. A friend got one his Durango and I drove and it seems quite nice.

No, I have the automatic since my wife doesn't drive a stick and managing a stick with a child in the back would be problematic. Also, the dealer didn't have any manuals, and it would have had to come from Midland or somewhere else, which might have taken awhile. I originally did want the manual, but since I was able to get the employee pricing, I figured I could afford the extra $900 for the auto.

I don't know about other people, but I wanted a truck because I've had several occasions over the last couple years when I needed a truck -- for hauling furniture, appliances, and most recently a dog traveling crate. Also, since I'm in the military and will be moving around a fair amount, the ability to haul a good portion of my household belongings, without having to entrust them to a mover who doesn't care if they are smashed, struck me as a large benefit. :)

Thats not nice, Ctk. Besides thats a sweet truck. Could you have gotten it w/a tyrbo diesel? I think the Dodges used to have Cummings diesels.

Its funny that you went from a Fox to a pick up, I just went from a blazer to a rocco. What happened to the fox?

Good luck w/the new truck, sounds like a cool ride.

I've got a '91 Dakota with a 318ci thats never given me an ounce of trouble. I think I'm going to be looking at another Dakota, standard cab, 8 ft. bed, a 360 if I can get it without getting that R/T.

Not likely you'll see me at the gas station since it's on base, and your tax dollars help PAY FOR IT FOR ME!!! Ahahahaha! Joke's on you, sucker.

Anyway...I don't think the Dakotas have a diesel option anymore, but I could be wrong about that. I'm fairly sure that the larger Rams have a diesel option, but since there is the chance (hopefully remote) that I could be stationed in a cold weather climate, the thought of a diesel there is NOT attractive. :)

I traded it in for $100! LOL! I was planning on selling it initially for a few hundred dollars, but the muffler hangers snapped, seriously wounding the value. Since it also needs a CV joint and engine mounts, the repairs exceed the value of the car (Blue Book is something like $400). Plus, trading it to them saves me the hassle of a private sale with a purchaser screaming at me because a mechanic tells them everything needs to be replaced. :D Seriously though, $100 was generous for that car.

I thought the standard was 6 ft?

Say hello to the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. Who says military service doesn't have its benefits?? I was VERY happy when they gave me that interest rate -- I expected at least half a point higher. I may have to refinance my wife's car through them, even though it would be considered used at this point. Of course, I think I may try to swing some protection from the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act and try for a 6% interest rate, since the debt was incurred prior to my active duty service. I am not sure that would work though, as it seems like a sneaky way of locking in a tremendously low rate. Can't hurt to write a letter though.

Oh, so you're a leech? How are those welfare checks these days? Food stamps working out ok? Or, more likely, Mommy and Daddy are paying for the acne medication.

Actually you may have luck with the SSCRA. The main problem some creditors have with it is that the law as written contemplates that your ability to pay is limited by your service (when in reality the opposite is often true). That said, I have had very good luck with it, and even had student lenders reduce my rate to 6% gratuitously (student loans are expressly excluded from the SSCRA, but I did not know this at the time, and apparently neither did my lenders!). As you said, it is probably worth a shot in any event.

Make sure to get USAA insurance - they are AMAZING (I could tell you some stories, but suffice it to say I have tried their patience through my repeated victimization by Okie thieves, and they have always been fantastic, and their rates are very good as well).
