but in the end you come out of the army as a blue color worker, something possible without the army.

Um...what? On the support MOS side, many people come out with expert trade knowledge, something that would stand out notably on a resume. There's more than just combat arms.

There's that whole going to shitholes where our enemies will try to kill you thing.

And I'm sure there's a downside too.

Not all trades see combat.

shhhh... don't ruin it. people might get wise and find out there is more to the service then combat, then everyone will want to do it.

Does she have a choice? If not, the point is pretty much moot.

women can not join combat arms. yes, she has a choice, and most MOS fields won't even be close to our out in the field, much less in danger.
There are a lot of support jobs, computer jobs, etc, that rarely go into the field.

Depleted Uranium.

Read about it -

http://www.google.com/search?h...+uranium&aq=0&oq=deple

See its effects -

http://images.google.com/image...1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

Army & Marines have more exposure to DU because they are "on the ground" more.

what the US does with some of its nuclear waste is turn it into munitions. the net effect
is hundreds of tons of depleted uranium dust wafting around Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans,
and neighboring countries.

Also, a web search on Gulf War syndrome
http://www.google.com/search?u...e&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=iw

the result of exposure to DU & other toxins in Gulf War 1. the rate of Gulf War Syndrome is very
high - about 25%.

to get a better idea of what it's like to be a troop, one way is to do a web search for
Post-Traumatic Stress Dis-Order.

Another way is to visit the local VA & volunteer with troops that have PTSD.

These are some of the side effects of Army service that they don't put into the brochures.

Tell her to join the Chair Force, I mean Air Force. ;)

I have friends and relatives in all 4 branches. My SIL is in the Army and is currently in Iraq. She seems to enjoy being in.

The only drawback is that Uncle Sam owns you. Also, crap rolls down hill, so going in with some college credits is good, college degree is better (commissioned vs. enlisted). Pay and perks are much better for officers over enlisted.

I joined about 3 months ago and I'm currently in OCS. The Army can make great changes in your life if you want them. If you're a dirtbag, you'll likely remain a dirtbag. I feel that I've gained a lot of discipline that I didn't have before. As part of that, I've gained a lot of will-power and self control. I promise, if you can keep running that 11th, that 12th mile, you will have the willpower to do just about anything. Keep in mind though, basic training isn't like on TV. It's not really very hard, and even total dirtbags make it through.

And while I'm a very open-minded, equality oriented type person, my short 3 months in the Army has shown me what ANY man who's been in as long will tell you: 75% of the women use their sex to work the system, skate on all their work, and get guys to do everything for them. My short time in the military has me almost to the point of saying there shouldn't be women in the military. I know a few very squared away, hard working women, but the rest are just working this situation for all they can.

Basically, if your niece is lazy, or a whore, she shouldn't join the Army, because everyone will resent her and the only way she'll get promoted is by blackmailing people she's slept with. If she's a highly motivated, smart, ambitious person, bring her on, we need more like her.

Don't do it. The chemicals you risk getting exposed to in the gulf are extremely dangerous. Depleted uranium is the worst though, since they aren't bombing as much these days, it won't be as bad as it is for the soldiers who were involved in the invasion.

The worst part about chemical exposure is that the effects take time to manifest and current military procedure for dealing with them is nil. They tell you you have a personality disorder and to go home.

There are about 8 people posting from Berkley, CA in this thread. One of my fellow OCs actually went to UC Berkley, and he was quick to point out that while the town is full of anti-American liberal douchebags, the University is just like any other, with only a moderate liberal bias.

So, what are the Pros and Cons?

if deployed in iraq or afganistan, 100% chance of sexual harrassment

how does she like a support role of fueling humvees or pressured into giving a hummer?

My coworker, who got his PhD from Berkeley, would be quick to point out that your friend is full of shit.
