Pros/Cons of an SUV? Sedan?

My friend is looking for a new car, although he thinks an SUV will be safer than a sedan. I'll be showing him this thread.

Here are some points I want someone else besides me to discuss:

1. "PRO: When you crash into other cars, you usually kill the occupants"
2. Better for snow?
3. "that it has a larger frame on the bottom of the vehicle and so when i car hits you...the frame will protect you"

Those weren't all his comments, but some of what his cousin gave. This will be his first car, I'm just reccomending some simple sedan.

the con of getting a SUV = a gas guzzling vehicle.

i own a '04 nissan xterra and their mpg kills me so much that i have to pay about $40 every gas stop.

I have a Subaru Legacy, I would recommend that or a 4 wheel drive "sedan" over a SUV simply because of rising gas costs/fuel economy.

Thats too bad, there are some decent wagons out there.

I rather get a van than SUV. Cheaper, more room, better ride.

As for gas price, I'll complain when we have to pay $5/gallon like rest of the developed world.

SUV = heavier = more momentum = longer stopping distances, sucks at obstacle avoidance, etc.

It may be inherently "safer" in a crash, due to the greater weight and elevated ride height...but wouldn't it be better to have a more nimble car that would have a better chance of avoiding the obstacle completely? This also goes for inclement weather...at the end of the day, all you have stopping your 5,000 lb SUV are the 4 contact patches made by the tires. If traction sucks, like in rain or snow, and you have to stop fast...that behemoth will prefer to slide, rather than stop - whereas a 3400 lb car would stop much quicker.

so get a king cab truck?

How do you bring more than 5 people?

How do you bring big dogs inside with AC?

It's no different than a nice truck expect the back is inside, not a cab.

Why do people not bitch at pickups when they are basically the same fvcking thing as a suburban?

<------- Annoyed at SUV hating city enviro punks who can't see that SOME people use them like they are supposed to be use.

I will admit to the stupidity of getting one for going to soccer practice, but I live in the mountains.

Try it at age 35 with 2 small children. I have. I choose this.

Edited to reduce anger factor.

Seriously, <breathes easy> when there is a need for an SUV, get one. I do agree that most are a waste of gas, money, stability, and resources. But not mine.

i hate suv's. i drive as part of my job and one thing i've noticed is that in general, the larger the vehicle, the worse the driver. i don't know if it's the "safety factor" of driving a tank that makes people into reckless idiots or what. one way to increase safety is not to drive like a moron. and hell, gas is $2.30 a gallon right now, i wouldn't want to pay 50 bucks to fill that thing only to get 10 miles per gallon. and do you really NEED a vehicle that large? are you planning on taking it off-road? get a hybrid sedan.

All depends on what you want to do with the vehicle. A full-size SUV is unmatched by anything other than a full-size truck in towing capacity, room for luggage/passengers, and general comfort.
They do like the gas, but again, that is a personal thing....I can afford the gas, so I don't care. If you can't, then maybe an SUV isn't for you.

I go on family trips with my Suburban. We recently drove to Orlando from NC, with 4 adults and 2 kids in child seats. We had all our luggage, and room to spare...not much, but some.
No way we could have done it in any other vehicle, in the same comfort. An Excursion is the only other vehicle that could have done it, but that is a huge heavy duty truck and the ride is terrible, so I don't consider it to be as nice as the Suburban/Yukon XL, which are top of the line for SUV's. (now joined by the Cadillac version of the Suburban)
I also have a race truck that I tow with it.
I am also a big guy...6' 4", 280lbs. I hate little cars....and anything smaller than a Crown Vic is little to me.
And, most importantly, I like the large SUV's. Get what you like, if you can.

Again, it's all in personal preference, what you intend to do with the vehicle, and what you like.

But what if you don't tow a giant trailer, or live in the mountains, or go off-roading? What if you need a vehicle to get you to and from work, maybe go to the grocery store, chauffeur children...I mean, trucks / SUVs are not without their uses, but from the OP it doesn't sound like the driver will have much need for the extra capabilities of such a vehicle. The cons outweigh the pros, in this case.

Unless of course the guy getting the car will need a tow vehicle, or an off-roader...

I see the exact opposite. SUV's are generally not the vehicles you see weaving in and out of traffic, and flying down the road.
You simply don't like them, so you take note of it every time you see one driving badly.

I agree, mini van in that case is much better.

On edit. Laurenlex's second car: Ford Escort Wagon 2.0 4 banger. Gets all the other miles.

1. "CON: When you crash into other cars, you usually kill the occupants"
2. Any car with all wheel drive (subaru, Audi), and a good suspension, will do well in snow.
3. Thats if you dont go into a roll, another suv doesnt hit you, and god doesnt decide to kill all of you for killing HIS planet.

I like all wheel drive cars and sedans, they are faster, more fun to drive (you can take turns amazingly well in a small AWD car), and better on gass.

Whats not to love about small cars, and dont say space. If you needed space you would get a truck. And if you really need a vehicle that can carry 8 people, you need your dick cut off.

Thank you.

most of my friends drive SUVs - honest to gawd do not know why as half of them live in the city. they just have too much $$$ to spare.

Great post man. I was a boyscout too, and ive spent a month with nothing but 8 could carry on our backs in the rain forests in Costa Rica. Real men sleep under the stars, if you need to bring the house with you when you go on a "camping trip", then i have to say your not a man at all. Do you wear your makeup out there in the "wild" big guy?

😉

True story.
