Try it at age 35 with 2 small children. I have. I choose this.

Edited to reduce anger factor.

Seriously, <breathes easy> when there is a need for an SUV, get one. I do agree that most are a waste of gas, money, stability, and resources. But not mine.

I was camping when i was VERY young, 3,4,5-now.

All depends on what you want to do with the vehicle. A full-size SUV is unmatched by anything other than a full-size truck in towing capacity, room for luggage/passengers, and general comfort.
They do like the gas, but again, that is a personal thing....I can afford the gas, so I don't care. If you can't, then maybe an SUV isn't for you.

I go on family trips with my Suburban. We recently drove to Orlando from NC, with 4 adults and 2 kids in child seats. We had all our luggage, and room to spare...not much, but some.
No way we could have done it in any other vehicle, in the same comfort. An Excursion is the only other vehicle that could have done it, but that is a huge heavy duty truck and the ride is terrible, so I don't consider it to be as nice as the Suburban/Yukon XL, which are top of the line for SUV's. (now joined by the Cadillac version of the Suburban)
I also have a race truck that I tow with it.
I am also a big guy...6' 4", 280lbs. I hate little cars....and anything smaller than a Crown Vic is little to me.
And, most importantly, I like the large SUV's. Get what you like, if you can.

Again, it's all in personal preference, what you intend to do with the vehicle, and what you like.

Ok but a trailer does not weigh that much. I used to pull a boat behind a cadilac.

Here are some points I want someone else besides me to discuss:

1. "PRO: When you crash into other cars, you usually kill the occupants"
2. Better for snow?
3. "that it has a larger frame on the bottom of the vehicle and so when i car hits you...the frame will protect you"

Those weren't all his comments, but some of what his cousin gave. This will be his first car, I'm just reccomending some simple sedan.

1. "CON: When you crash into other cars, you usually kill the occupants"
2. Any car with all wheel drive (subaru, Audi), and a good suspension, will do well in snow.
3. Thats if you dont go into a roll, another suv doesnt hit you, and god doesnt decide to kill all of you for killing HIS planet.

I like all wheel drive cars and sedans, they are faster, more fun to drive (you can take turns amazingly well in a small AWD car), and better on gass.

Whats not to love about small cars, and dont say space. If you needed space you would get a truck. And if you really need a vehicle that can carry 8 people, you need your dick cut off.

Thank you.
The fact that you're a sitting duck when the soccer mom yelling at her kids in her SUV (weighing 2x what your small car does) blows a red light at 60 mph and broadsides your car? You = ICU (if you're lucky), Her = "What was that bump?"

Don't get me wrong, I prefer cars as well - but all methods of transportation have their own sets of pros and cons. There is no "correct" answer.

And most subaru's will have better groundclearance, less body roll, will use less gas, will cost less to maintain, last longer, hold more value, out maneauver and corner suv's....

unless you absoulutley need to tow (which most suv's suck at anyway) WHILE carrying 7 people AND WHILE carrying tons of gear ALL WHILE offroading, get a fvcking grip and consult my table below

I want __fill in the blank____:

Snow or Offroad Dependability:
Subaru's, the evo, Audi's... the Subaru based Saab.... etc etc etc
Ride Height, Snow or Offroad Dependability:
Ford 500 AWD, Subaru Forrester... essentially a tall subaru legacy... the only "suv" I consider forgivable
Ride Height, Snow or Offroad Dependability and an average of 6+ passengers:
Any AWD Minivan... I believe the toyota sienna has AWD... awesome pickup, AWD and 7+ people, all with great gas mileage...
Ride Height, Towing, Snow or Offroad Dependability and and 7+ people:
Get some new hobbies, face it YOU'RE A POSER

A. Wasn't much of a boat
B. You had much more than the car was designed to tow behind it

And
C. You wouldn't tow my trailer with a full-size race truck and equipment behind your Cadillac.
You'd be an idiot to tow it with anything other than a full-size truck or SUV.

Coming from Buffalo, all you see i nteh ditches is SUVs. So:
2. Better for snow?
BULL SH!T!! To stay out of the snow, you nmeed oto know how to drive. And if that's truely your concern, front wheel drive is 10 times better than 4 WD!

For that matter, AWD is almost as bad as 4 WD.

TWO BIG ADVERTSING GIMICS THAT ARE TOTAL BS!

not only are SUVs more likely to roll over, the roof strengths of SUVs are generally weaker relative to passenger cars because of a double standard safety classification that subjects SUVs to truck standards vs car standards. In the vehicle type most likely to experience a roll over, the protection standard is also the weakest.

In the 216 test, one side of the roof must support one and a half times the unloaded weight of the vehicle. For cars, there is a 5,000-pound limit.

To address the onslaught of bigger trucks, NHTSA attempted in 1989 to apply the regulation to vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds. But the Big Three lobbied against it and NHTSA gave in, agreeing only to a 6,000-pound limit.

In effect, the heaviest trucks and SUVs, mainstream products like the Dodge Durango, Lincoln Navigator and Chevy Tahoe, are technically exempt from the 216 test.

I dunno man.... I used to have a subaru legacy... now I do the PA winters in the snow.... and man do I miss my legacy... call it a gimmick all you want, but there is real beauty in subaru all wheel drive

As for gas price, I'll complain when we have to pay $5/gallon like rest of the developed world.

You do know gas is subsidised by your government right? You know where your gov't gets money, right?

I can do you one better. The last time I went camping when I took the mustang to the campsite, it was in november and a tropical storm hit.... we were less than 150 feet from the delaware river and no more than 2 feet above the water table. we had to evacuate in the middle of the flood. I was an assistant scoutmaster and none of the other parents were there to help get the troop out of there... the scoutmaster in his Ford Windstar and myself in my Mustang got 12 kids, troop and personal gear out of there just as the water was lappign against our tires. It was as soggy as a brownie, but I know how to drive and we got out of there easily without ever having to get out and push.

oh, and you're a poser

You are somewhat correct, young man. Front wheel drive is good in snow. But what happens when the snow is so deep that your no-ground-clearance front wheel drive car gets packed with snow underneath, gets high centered, and starts spinning the front wheels? STUCK.

4 wheel drive vehicles have a unique option called LOW RANGE. It changes the gearing of the vehicle so you can crawl out of slippery conditons without spinning the tires.

Once again, if you don't need it, don't buy it. But quit being a SUV bashing enviro weenie if you have no concept of how SOME people ACTUALLY use these vehicles as intended.

Disclaimer: Once again, for the 3rd time, I am not advocating a 3/4 ton Suburban for going to the mall. There is a use for them, but not in the cities.

I've never had a "low range gearbox" and never had any problem getting anywhere in the snow in my ABSless Traction Control-less mustang... even when it was hills of unpacked powder a foot deep with my summer tires and I can prove it

I guess it's time to agree to disagree. Geography must be taken into consideration, and we have not.

I live at 5300 feet, and only go higher for fun. We do not salt our roads, there are wind blown ground blizzards, and winter sucks. I live in one of the snowiest places other than upstate New York.

You are the man (I meant boy scout) for being such a good camper. You must be a great driver, and are most likely really hot and a stud in the sack.

MY POINT: MOST people do not need a huge 4x4 SUV, but I do!

My question though is... if you need an SUV so badly now.... what did you do without one before they became so mainstream? You have the original Land Rovers imported?

Fine, the are good for towing, just like a truck. But us real men will stick to cars and leave the SUV's to you momas boys and soccer moms. Agian, if you need to drag your house along with you then you are not really camping. Dont give excuses about small children because my parents did it with me and my twin brother. AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!

I said I was done replying to your topics, Acmcmac.

Do you know my vehicle history since I was a licenced driver? I don't think so.

I have owned: '86 Ford Bronco (full size) for going to the mountains
Wife owned: '94 Ford Explorer (brand new) that was a victim of the SUV craze that you speak of.
Me Owned: '93 Ford F-150 4x4 (real truck, hunting, off road)

Get laid, have children, and you might find a use for a bigger vehicle. Geez, city kids.

An SUV is never safer than a sedan...does your friend ever read auto magazines or does he just base his opinion on some stupid "my SUV is trail rated" or the inane "professional grade crap" commercials?

FWD is NEVER better than 4WD in the snow. Ever. Anyone who says it is simply isn't credible.

AWD, I'm not a big fan of, but true 4WD can't be beat in the snow....there's no way that having 2 extra tires pulling you isn't better.
