You also gotta think about all the things that are happening at once in GTA:SA... you've got ALL those innocent people standing around.

And they're all in some sort of particle engine, or something, to tell them where to go.

Along with all the cars... and the bullets... and the explosions.

You've got to leave some overhead, because those 10-car-pileups happen quite often. And although the PS2 does drop framerate, it's still playable.

If the graphics were 'amazing', I think GTA would be 'unplayable' when all the fun is happening.

Proof that graphics don't make the game

PS1 and PS2's dominance of their respective generations should be more than enough proof that graphics are far from the most crucial aspect when it comes to games... PSX (or PS1) was pitted against Saturn (which had better hardware and discs) and n64 with clearly better hardware although it had carts, however the games were obviously better in terms of ingame non-prerendered graphics. And it was quite clear that the PS2 is easily inferior to the GameCube and XBox in terms of hardware capabilities, yet its sold so much more. Sony is definately doing something other than winning fans over with graphics. Die hard loyalty from an entrenched fan base and brand name recognition - "ooo, its Sony"... They've been the first out the door of their respective generations, perhaps they are making a mistake with the PS3, however they'll still have their entrenched fanbase that finally gets to claim superiority with hardware. Microsoft had better not pull a DreamCast and flub up the launch of the 360, it obviously needs some really strong launch titles as well as good fill between then and the release of PS3 - that is if M$ wants to steal any thunder...they could definately do it, it isn't impossible.

Its in the hall of fame because the geeks who rate the computer games want to be gangster and so they just give it a good rating. The same sucks, I already played it.

and the 1000th FPS where you run around in a dungeon/space station and shoot aliens/zombies/monsters is NOT lame ? :)

Mark.

ASCII games are awesome.

If you like Nethack, go and try out Ancient Domains of Mystery. Awesome game, consumed many of my hours. Watching an @ run from an & is a weird concept in todays modern gaming world.

well...its just AGTASAT (another gta:sa thread)...anyway i have to agree the gfx are FAR UNDER what should be standard today.

It takes a LOT of positive thinking to really see an improvement over VC, and VC is such an old game !

The worst part is that (IMHO) for the shabby gfx it has it should run MUCH faster (at least with my setup)...i have no problems running high-end games at max. fine and smooth. What irony that there are SOME places (not always) in SA where it gets stuttery actually which is insane on a A64 3500+ and X850XT, both overclocked to the max.

STILL - i very much enjoy GTA:SA and VC and the gameplay is MUCh better and more fun that Doom or similiar.

But i still think they have to get rid of all those bugs !

in a game where each mission is unique, (flying helicopters, manning a minigun, chasing down gangbangers with a bike, pouring cement with a cement mixer, and wtf else!) how can there NOT be small bugs? Give them credit, this game is immersive, massive, and enthralling.

They did a good job whether you people "like" the game or not. Don't wanna be a bandwagoner? Hate it; go swim in piss. Think being a "gangster" is retarded? Live with your mother.

I know, this is off topic, but on title...

Proof that graphics don't make the game is in the game of Tetris. Gameplay makes it. If it works for you, then GREAT.

BTW, one of my favs still is a IBM PC came called Popcorn. Compiled specifically for the 8086 with CGA. Would not work on a IBM AT or faster as the code used the timer in the chip as its sync. Since about 85% of you are too young to have had a IBM PC, it was a pong style game with blocks (Breakout?). Special blocks would fall and if you caught them with your paddle, it would do special things like sticky paddle, force field, three balls, wide paddle. No one cared about FPS either... ;)

OK, back to the regularly SA discussion...
