Well here goes the start of another project... This time a 1990 Tsi AWD & My first DSM. I Paid $500 For it. Agood amount of money was dumped into the drive train. Eprom ECU with custom chip (plus two other chips with unknown profiles). 550cc injectors EVO III 6 bolt short block, tubular exhaust manifold (wrapped), 16G w/EVO III o2 housing, Megan downpipe.

The 5spd transmission has been Rebuilt with replaced syncros & aftermarket center diff. Light weight flywheel and performance clutch ( I was told clutch is an ACT 6 Puck he didn't have receipt for it or flywheel).

Half of lower bumper cover missing and a couple of dents one crudely pulled out on drivers side rear corner. Interior was stripped down to bare minimum, all that is left is fronts seats, center console, dash and door panels. Inside looked like was used for trash can as two bags of trash removed.(found outer piece of spoiler among trash.)

Oh yea, can't forget the back yard 3inch downpipe back exhaust that previous owner attempted to make. They kinked the exhaust pipe to make bends rather than having it bent. I measured one kink in exhaust pipe to be slightly less than one inch . This Talons previous owner had the intentions of it being race car project that owner lost interest and no time or any more funds to work on the .

Goal for project weekend warrior / days off track day toy / daily driver if needed. I want to keep the cash outlay as small as possible (aren't we all trying).

Yes, I am a new member to this site and I was never banned():) As a friend of Jlee and with his pending move out of the rust belt. I Thought it would be easier to stay in touch and keep track of each others projects. I was spending enough time helping on his mr2 that I started to get the bug for for an return to owning a force fed 4banger myself. When this car kind of fell in my lap and couldn't pass it up.:D

So here is the start of another project & yes it is posted on another site as well. The minimum cash out lay is going to be held a tight as possible but, I have already spent more on incoming parts than I paid for car :)eek:ed I am not)

Where this will head and what will be done to it has yet to be determined. :sneaky:

It looks like a decent amount of body work to get it back to "good looking," but on the other hand, if you're just going for a 10 (or 100) footer with all the money spent where it counts, you should be able to get away pretty cheap.

When it's body is done if turns out a 20 footer will be happy.

Great clean slate car!

These when tuned have a nice power to weight ratio and grip almost too much off the line. Dont forget creature comforts as well since those seats now that the padding has deteriorated down to almost nothing that a inexpensive drop in would go a long way to making it more liveable.

I remember seeing one of these turbocharged at an autocross a lifetime ago going like stink and laying down some great times. I also remember some kid bragging about his turbo only costing him 800 bucks in parts some other time.

Do you have a rough mod list to start?

on all my cars I always start with suspension/wheels then body since they seem like the areas of most need on older cars.

One of my first cars was an 1990 turbo Eclipse and it was a blast to drive. I'm looking forward to your updates.

I bought a 1990 Eclipse AWD new. I liked it when I test drove it but I didn't like it long after driving it a while. I could not stand the shifter. It was pure shit. I hope there is a fix for that because shifting that car fast was dangerous. Overall it wasn't a terrible car just too small and the turbo seals didn't last long and the timing belt broke at 50K miles and I didn't even flog it.

I have heard they are pretty quick modded I just hope the drive train can take it.

crankwalk

Can be fixed with proper sized thrust bearings. This was a goof from the manufacture/vendor providing the wrong bearings, not a impossible to fix flaw in the engine.

OP also said it has a 6 bolt block, those are generally safe from classic DSM crankwalk.

I used to own a 1991 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. Had to drop a new motor into it because of what the previous owner did to it. You can see some of the damage here:

I had an interesting issue with my shifter. No matter how properly I torqued the shift linkage bracket, it always came loose. I don't know if it was a matter of me not taking into account using never-seize on it or something like that, but I had so many problems with it. It felt like I was shifting through marshmallows. o_O

Wow, looks like a grenade got sucked through that engine.

Haha, yeah. :)

I'm not really sure how the hole blew through the bottom. It seems like the piston head is what caused the damage, but wouldn't that have blown through the cylinder wall if anything?

Looks like that's where the balance shaft sits. Bent/floppy rod probably smacked it good and tried to force it out the block, or bits and pieces of the exploding piston got wedged between the shaft and rod at just the right time, etc. It's amazing where shit tries to go and ends up at 6,000 RPM :p

If the rod was bent, the big end and rod bolts would be rotated more on the crank than it would normally be, and at 90 deg throw I bet it hit the balance shaft and that's what broke the block. eg: the whole part of the block with the balance shaft journal and bearing is missing, that appears to be the stress point. I'm sure that's what it was, I can see what looks like contact damage on the balance shaft in all your pics perfectly lined up with the #1 crank journal. Steel balance shaft with nowhere to go vs cast iron block. Shaft wins.

Was it the bent rod or the broken one that came out of #1?

yes tons of kits for the shifters

the service interval on the belt is 40k. probably should have looked into that :sneaky:

Decided tonight to drive the 90 talon into work (27 miles). The drive in was going fine other than a rather strong animal based ammonia smell coming from heater vents:\. Only to then have the brake pedal suddenly slam into the firewall while getting off the interstate:eek:. Limped it the rest way to work no and found the cause, left rear hard line blown out. Hard line for right side rear is also looks to be seeping in two places as well. Looks like I know of one more thing to add to repair / replace list. May be crimping it off if the line if it is not to crusty and then try to limp it home in the morning. (got to love living in the rust belt.:hmm:)

You'd have done far better buying a more solid base to start on.

By your last post you are now driving around in a deathtrap, get it off the road and to a real mechanic that would have seen all these issues.

Not according to Mitsubishi at the time considering the car had about 49K on it when it just died at a stop sign and would not restart and it was under warranty so the dealer fixed all the damage. It bent four valves so the head had to be reworked along with the turbo that was spewing smoke due to bad design on the seals. I was about to take it to the dealer for the turbo when the belt went so I got it all fixed at the same time for free.

The inner hoon is weak in this one...

You're not a real car nut until you've gotten a fun, dangerous, and horrendously unreliable car.

don't know how to respond to that except I think you think Jay Leno is not a real car nut and you are when the best you have had can be bought with almost anyone's weekly paycheck.

Difference is Jay Leno also has a Trabant in his collection and isn't ashamed or embarrassed to drive it. He will drive and appreciate any piece of shit and have fun with it, its not just about showing off the price tag. He also gets his hands dirty when he could easily pay someone else to do it. And because of that I have tremendous respect for him as a genuine car nut.
