Progressive Oregon goes after Beer drinkers

Many states tax revenues have fallen off sharply as a result of the economy. To offset this State politicians are following the Fed goverments lead of raising money through sin taxes .
I don't drink so again this doesn't affect me, but I do feel sorry for those that do, as I know sooner or later they will raise taxes on something I do consume.( I can just see the 1500% increase on my Emergen-C drink.)

Scott Jantze would be thrilled if somebody - anybody - would price cigarettes so high he wouldn?t buy them.

LOL, I guess for now the guy's health is less important than money.

This article is too short. I don't see how $.15 on a pint in a barrel can turn into $1.50 down the line.

Many would have this done to smokers without flinching, both are lame. Sin taxes on sugary drinks, fatty foods, smokes and booze are some of my fears of expanded government funding of health-care as the government tries to legislate a healthier society to reduce future health-care costs. IMO, if de facto prohibition returns, it will not be because of evangelicals, but from nanny legislation via massive taxation and restrictions.

Welcome to 2 months ago.

While we need to remain vigilant for the rest of the legislative session, 2461 is essentially dead in committee at this point.

2 months is a drop in the bucket in politics.
It looks active?

As the reporter on the scene in Oregon Vic ,give us the full skinny. Isn't this more a tax on Ore workers then beer drinkers? I know you have lots of microbreweries down there.
Understand there going after wine also?
Vigilant is an understatement🙂

edit: link won't work. here's what it said.

House Bill 2641

Most importantly, how does that tax rate compare to the rest of the states? A huge percentage increase is pretty meaningless if the initial tax is minicule. The article the OP links mentions that the Oregon tax presently is one of the lowest in the country, is about a penny per glass and hasn't been raised in thirty years.

<--- Not taking a position one way or another, just wishing for an objective presentation of the facts.

The Social Conservatives definitely are, especially the Fundie Whack Jobs. Now I don't think this is an effort to get people to stop drinking, just a fucked up way to get money out of them.

I don't agree with a large one-time increase, but Oregon's beer tax is one of the lowest in the nation right now. It can definitely be increased a little more moderately without doing any damage to the industry.

Usually the only people who don't care about incessant taxation are those who don't pay taxes.
Therefore they see themselves as more likely to recieve then give.
On the otherhand many people help neighbors willingly out of a sense of obligation and community and don't need Obamunism to spread the wealth.

Oregon has not increased the beer tax in decades.

Has your property tax increased in decades?

Has the retail price of beer gone up in decades?

Are you figuring out why this thread is a little misguided now?

Who are you talking about? I live in NYC and pay about the highest taxes in the country. Maybe it's the definition of incessant that needs refining.

I heard today from Steve Wamhoff of Citizens for Tax Justice. He had an interesting tidbit to offer on the teabagging movement. According to his research, 39% of respondents with incomes below $30,000 told the Gallup agency that they felt that federal income tax levels were ?too high.? Which is interesting, because only 32% of respondents in that income category will pay any federal income taxes at all on their 2008 income.

Report here: http://www.ctj.org/pdf/taxdaypoll.pdf

Huh, people complaining about taxation are those who aren't paying any, which is the opposite of your assertion. Care to offer anything to back up your position?

yea i will, thats federal taxes. how much does that 32% spend in sales taxes, sin taxes, fuel taxes? as a collective that 32% spends a WHOLE lot more on everyday items and are taxed more the rich. so get a damn clue before you spout stupid stats like that.

the OP link is a perfect example of government taxing the shit out of the lower and middle class.

Their current tax is very low, but upping it to 15 cents would make it fairly high. I don't really understand the comment I read somewhere (I think in the Seattle Times) that this tax would make a $4 pint $5.50 though.

Good thing I don't live in Oregon and also brew my own I guess. 🙂 I infact just brewed a batch of honey Ale last night. Should be ready for Memorial day weekend. Mmmmm beer.

You anti-American tea-bagging bastard!

Oregon doesn't have a sales tax so I imagine they want to capitalize on tourism and those enjoying the micro-brew industry. Also, what was the original tax?

Thanks for your input, but if you're going to butt into a discussion between other people at least try to follow the discussion. I'll summarize it so you don't get lost again.

daniel49: Usually the only people who don't care about incessant taxation are those who don't pay taxes.
me: this data shows 39% of people making under 30,000/yr feel income tax is too high despite 32% of that group won't be paying any income tax at all. Seems people who don't pay taxes DO care about what they feel is excessive taxation.
you: I like jello!

You don't think 1900% is not an excessive increase? Your not in NY your on Mars.
And Citrix is welcome in any conversation of mine.
