Prognosis for SI joint pain?

So I've been suffering from some pretty severe SI joint pain for the past month and a half. I am mostly pain free while standing up, but when I sit down for a while (particularly in a car) I have low back/SI joint pain that radiates down my legs (sciatica). Sitting with a lacrosse ball on my low back relieves the pain, but the ball itself is uncomfortable.

My PCP thinks that the cartilage in my SI joint is inflamed and is causing the pain. She prescribed oral steroids (Prednizone) and told me to come back if they did not do anything. Unfortunately the steroids did not touch the pain, which if anything has become worse over the last week. So . . . I will be going back to see my PCP or a specialist soon.

That said I wanted to see if anyone here has had an SI joint problem. If so, would you mind describing your issue and the current status of it? I've read that this could be a recurring problem, but I am hoping that there is a reasonable prognosis for a full recovery.

TLDR - I have an SI joint problem and am in near constant pain. I would like to know if anyone here has dealt with a similar issue and, if so, what their outcome is/was.
 
It wouldn't surprise me if you end up diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disk around L5 that's pressing into the nerve... however, if the pain is sciatica you've been trying to treat - the lacrosse ball would have been better served on your piriformis than your low back.
 
Oral steroids are awesome...stick with them...they won't solve the pain, but will help the muscle heal if you've got a tear somewhere.

I agree with RandomWords....go look up Piriformis Syndrome and try some of the seated stretches. If you have a herniated disc, it may take time for it to realign and the pressure to get better. Try to get up and move every 15-20 minutes. Desk jobs don't make this stuff any easier... PM me your email address and I'll send you a PDF of core stretches that I started doing this AM. They work abs, lower back, glutes, etc... Also, get yourself a foam roller. I got one from TJ Maxx for $12.99 last week and have been working out with it.

I'm suffering from my piriformis right now and have had a lot of issues with L5 on my left side for years.
 
I'll try to find links to all the fun stuff I've been doing for the last year. Basically lots of stretching until you figure out where the problem actually lies then focus on that and what's causing it. I'm fairly sure I've still got a significant herniation of my L5/S1 but it doesn't hurt 95% of the time if I stretch after workouts. Also while sitting I've found that keeping your knees in line with your hips helps a lot. I tend to get lazy and let me knees open out and that causes all sort of problems for me.
