is this normal? I have a Ti 89 that i used in HS, this professor said no graphing calcs at all...wtf is up with that? There is no way im finding the graph of all the derivatives by hand.

I need some input on this...should i just drop the class and look for another professor or is this perfectly normal?

This is pretty normal. In fact, the only reason we were allowed to use them was because our calc prof was confused by technology and didn't want to outright ban them since it was the only calculator a lot of us had.

Anyone else who took calc at my college couldn't use them.

I don't remember much graphing anyway. Pretty much everything eas easy to do by hand. Granted that was 6 years ago, so it's a bit fuzzy.

In all of my calculus classes (other than high school) we couldn't use calculators.

Calc II is typically a weed-out course at a lot of universities.

It's also more than managable without a calculator, and you actually learn things. Don't tell me you're one of those sorry sods that don't know who to take a derivative because you always did it with the push of a few buttons on your Ti-89?

Never had a graphing calculator. You can easily draw the graph by hand if you know the formula.

no...i know how to take a derivative fine, except its pretty tedious at least in my experience to graph and integrate. IIRC there was a lot of calculator work in calc 1...so i figured calc II would be similar, but i guess i am incorrect.

Normal. I had other classes like Physics, Chemistry, etc that wouldn't allow graphing calculators because of the fact that they can store formulas and what not.

Since you can't use calculators, exam problems will reflect that. Generally, with a good professor, answers will come out to be whole numbers or easy fractions (i.e. 1/2, 1/3, etc.).

Half the point of the course is to learn how to do that stuff without a graphing calculator.

Function = 0 tells you the roots
1st Derivative = 0 tells you the local max/min
2nd Derivative = 0 tells you the inflection points

Then just connect the dots. It's not that hard. If you're doing calc II you're probably integrating the area between two functions. Just set f = g and solve for the intersections. You're going to have to do all of this in three dimensions in calc III anyways.

yep, my prof only allowed scientific calculators too

edit: and if you didn't have a calculator and REALLY needed to know the sin/cos/tan of whatever, taylor/mclauren series are your friends

I agree that it's standard...the problems aren't going to be too hard to figure out mentally. You can also post the problems here after the test...

Calculators are for pussies. Especially TI-89's that look like normal graphing calculators but will do a damn lot of calculus for you (assuming you are not retarded). Not to mention storing formulas as text. That's basically a cheat sheet.

When I was in school they considered the slide rule as cheating. Stop whining. :p
