Hey, I'm looking to build a hi-end gaming PC with an AMD, yet I am not quite sure that I am on the level of putting everything together myself. I bet I could probably figure it all out, but I admit I lack confidence, especially when I'm holding $2,300 in parts in my hands. I was looking at Monarch, but I was wondering if anybody has any other suggestions for pro-built rigs.

That's the thing, I need to check out competition before I buy anything from Monarch. Alienware just seems like a Dell Intel-based system except with a $3,000 case. I'll check Voodoo and Falcon NW though.

This computer isn't exactly "owned" by me. I did the payment option with Dell, and after 6 exhausting calls to India, I decided I loathe everything about Dell, and am not going to pay them anymore money. They are going to repo this computer. I don't care.
 
Buy your own parts and build it yourself. If you fried anything just RMA the part and do it again. If you don't know, just ask.

just a thought, can you swap out the graphics card with something cheaper before they repo it? 🙂
 
o yea, voodoo and Falcon NW make some amazing looking cases, but u gotta pay a premium for it. If you don't wanna pay the price for a voodoo or falcon nw rig, just build it yourself. It's like putting together a puzzle, its not hard. Plus all the manuals tell you what to do. It's pretty much fool proof.

I thought companies just let you keep the computer and just sue you for whats owed? Maybe its different with high end systems? Don't know as I've never owned a company computer.

Well you can search for my rig on anandtech, I've got an Alienware that was only $1800. Pretty cheap IMO.
 
If you've played with legos and can use a screwdrive, you too can put a computer together.

Just make sure to ground yourself first by touching the metal part of the case and not to leave any loose screws running around in your case.
 
Of the prebuilts, Monarch and ABS are good, Monarch especially has a really high rating over at resellerratings.com. Building isn't hard at all though, that's just what Dell and Alienware would have you think.

Although slightly OT, doing this can be really, really bad for your credit rating. Plus, they'll probably just sic a collection agency on you if you stop paying them.
 
Well thanks for the advice, people. As far as the fascists at Dell are concerned, I told them I was considering a lawsuit because I paid for 3 yrs of warantee & service, yet whenever I call them for technical support I am unable to understand a single word they say. I consider that a violation of my service agreement, and am currently working out a deal with them where I voluntarily return the computer and the thing gets squashed.

If I can save over $150 by putting my rig together myself rather than buying from Monarch, I will.

Well people who build high end model cars and stuff are nervous too, but that's the fun in it. It feels so good to put something together like a PC and see it fire up for the first time. Now, I'm not one of those "Prebuiltz teh suxx0rz!" elitists, but I will say that you will get the satisfaction of knowing that you built it and you'll know what every piece of equipment under the hood is. No generic parts. Some places skimp out on high quality parts to increase profit. How do you think that Dell sells PC's for $400?

The biggest problem with Alienware and those types of 'performance' systems, is if you encounter a problem. Being that they OC systems to beyond tolerances, getting them to support them after say, 6 months, becomes tedious at best.

I'd rather build my own and deal with defective parts myself, least you know what you are getting and can RMA as you need.
