"Dad was fucking around under the hood of one of the tractors again."
I feel that this is sufficiently brief, and conveys my anger or disgust toward dad for trying to "fix" a tractor.

well using it as a verb is something entirely different. I mean who's going to say "make love"?

How in the hell did you come to that conclusion? (I obviously strongly disagree.)

"Dad was fucking around under the hood of one of the tractors again."
I feel that this is sufficiently brief, and conveys my anger or disgust toward dad for trying to "fix" a tractor.

"Dad was working under the hood of one of the tractors again."
Doesn't convey the severity of the statement.

"Dad, in his usual manner of grievous stupidity, was seen doing something under the hood of one of the tractors, again."
Too long, and while it attempts to convey the severity, does not.

I can't think of any non-profane manner to properly express my feelings about "dad", in this context, without being exceptionally verbose.

'jerking around', 'messing around', 'screwing around', 'fiddling around'. Even 'dicking around'.

I keep profanities for when the situation deserves it. Damn is reserved for moderate displeasure in certain companies. If I am at work, that company is limited to the support staff. I use the word "shit" on occasion when I do something annoyingly stupid (dropping a tool, stubbing a toe, you know... shit!).

F*ck is a word I don't even like typing. I do use it when I am in certain groups of friends. I accidentally said it to my mother on the phone when I was just starting college. She called while I was watching PSU Football. She asked me a question and I said (as I would to my friends at the time) "I don't f*cking know". I got quiet then said damn it... my friends said "say f*ck to your mom again", this did not help the situation. My mom laughed and hung up saying pleasantries.

For me they are reserved words. They provoke and convey empathy. I do not like to do either. Thus I try to refrain from using curse words.
