Boss laid me and another programmer off. claims he cant afford paying us anymore. Unlike the last time I got laid off, im not gonna wait for another programming job and go into debt again (took 6 months back in 2001) I will pick up a $9 an hour service job this weekend and start sending out resumes again.

Funny thing is I usually only post on here when I'm working at a computer. When I'm on my computer at home I'm more productive, and will get up and go eat or watch TV when I need a break instead of going to ATPN.

How are you going to get the $9 service job?

If you are going to program, what are you going to do after the service jobs?

Do you think getting laid off was your fault? :-/

Service jobs are easy to get. There is always work for those willing to do it.

Good luck on the search train.

Good luck train.

I've been job hunting too but I recently discovered all of the job applications I've sent for the past 30 days went to my university's screening department and were never forwarded to the hiring employers. I've been filled with rage for the past 3 days over this, because I have only $30 in my bank account right now.

Helloooooo debt.

Anyways, sorry to rant. I wish you the best Train

I'm always sorry when someone loses a job. :( I lost my job of 23 years quite a while ago. I had my behind covered because I farmed on the weekends. There just aren't any jobs around here anymore. My last job paid $6/hr with no benifits. No OT, not even paid vacationsor holidays and it was night shift. Don't you just love Right to Work states, LOL.

Good Luck!!

Not hard around here, plus I never burn bridges ;) Before I was a programmer I was a cook in a 4 star restuarant, $9 is a low estimate, If I go one town over entry level is like $10.50 for cooks, $15 for clerical/office type stuff, and I'm skilled in either, so im not too worried right now.
If you are going to program, what are you going to do after the service jobs?
huh? do you mean how am I going to do both? I dont, one is quick and easy until I find another. I might do a few hours freelance proggin, like I've done before, but thats about it.
Do you think getting laid off was your fault? :-/
I'd say about 10% my fault, 90% the managements own stupidity biting them in the ass. They are running out of money and its thier own fault. I'm half tempted to become thier #1 competitor exactly 6 months from today (the day the non-compete agreement runs out ;))

fvck yeah, I've worked in a lot of professions, and this is by far the least stable, stuff changes overnight, talk about stress. One day I get a good paying 9-5 then im out on the street for a while, then another good paying 9-5, back on the street. etc. But I dont think im gonna change professions, im meant to program, my brain is way too logical to be wasted on anything else.

(at first i thought you said ADD Marine, heh) nope, went reserve, still undecided on wether I should have went active or not. I love being a Marine, but the day to day on a base would drive me nuts (think USAF discipline times 20), I prefer just going in for the crazy times. Though I actually volunteered for extra active duty last year after I got back, but I never heard back from HQ, guess they already had enough volunteers. Should get called on for my second tour within a year anyways.

What timing, my night class starts tomarow (1st non-military class I've taken in about 3 years) so maybe this is a blessing in disguise. At least I will have plenty of time to study!

Sounds like you have a good attitude. Good luck with your hunt and keep that positive attitude - even when others would give up and become pessimistic.

Train, have you checked into that non-compete? You can't be restricted from being able to make a living.

Train,
I'd make one suggestion... Go have lunch with your former boss and let him know you'd be available for projects on a per diem basis.. (as a contractor). You already understand what this company develops and if the company generates more demand for your talents your boss has an option available to him.. He'd value this... assuming he values your talents. He'd not have to hire and train for a short term project and he may see some wisdom in hiring through a Temp Agency.. I'd go there too..
At the company I used to work at we'd hire most of our designers, drafters etc. from a Temp Agency so we didn't invest in someone who didn't cut it... or fit in.
In any event, you've a talent that is marketable and will be into the future. I'd look to Defense Industry assuming you program in Machine Language.. (what ever that is) or what ever they now use and from the looks of things... it is gonna have a climbing demand.

This is true - however it likely depends on how he was "released". If he was laid-off(intent to rehire) and his non-compete contract is written well - he's likely screwed. But if he was let go with no intent to rehire - he should be free to do as he wishes.
We just had a guy leave to work at a customer of ours not too long ago. He was screwed due to our non-compete...except for the fact he didn't sign one upon his rehire(he left once before and then came back).
Management was cooking eggs on their faces :p

Definately something to check into though.

Best of luck Train

Although some may say and feel I was pessimistic and given up that obviously cannot be true as I would've been long dead in the water as last full wage scale job I had was August 2001.

I'm starting to come out of slump with 4 job offers within 2 days even after I started one I am posting from Indy while on training. I'm going back to New Orleans for the Labor Day weekend and then back here for 2 more weeks. I never did programming and this is Unix scripting  , we'll see how I do.

I'm pretty confident I won't kill the Unix boxes, if not I won't fret over it like the end of the world contrary to popular belief.
