The computers can see themselves, but not each other. Pings toward the two, time out.

IP addresses are set to 192.168.0.1, and 192.168.02. The subnet is 255.255.255.0. Both computers have the little icon indicating connection at 100Mbps. The connection lights on the switch are on.

I have run the network connection wizard on both computers.

Any ideas?

Are they connected to a hub/switch or directly using a single network cable?

"Are they connected to a hub/switch or directly using a single network cable?"

As I said in the first post, the connection lights on the switch are on.

Thanks Jack, I'll try that tomorrow!

You need to check that they are both in the same domain, and that they are both in the same work group. Next check to make sure that your IPs are the same... I would suggest something out of the 198.x.x.x range because I have had more troubles with that than success... check 10.x.x.x with a subnet of 255.255.255.0.

Make IP addresses the SAME? They should be different, right? Like 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2, right?

The subnet is 255.255.255.0. Both computers are set to be in workgroup MSHOME. How do I check the domain?

You are correct, they should be different, what I meant is that they are in the same range i.e. 10.236.236.2 and 10.236.236.1 the subnet ought to be 255.255.255.0. Domain it depends on what OS you are using. Keep in mind that the master browser is always on the newer OS. What OS are you using? I am assuming XP or 2K since you have the icons. Try changing work groups to HOME, or Da_House this way the master browser will reset itself. Keep us informed.

r-click on my computer and go to the "Computer Name" Tab and if your computer is named bob it should show "bob." if you are on a domain it will be "bob.domain" if these are not on a domain set up the "network identification wizard" and follow the following instructions:

Next
This computer is part of a business network, and I use it to connect to other computers at work.
Next
My computer uses a network without a domain
Next
Workgroup( Home )
Next
Finish

Tell me if that fixed it.

The computers are not on a domain, but I don't seem to be able to find the network identification wizard in the options. How do you get to it???

Sorry, I didn't see it there.

Anyway to find it using search? What's the .exe of the wizard?

Okay, man, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

I right click on my computer, select properties.

Click on the "computer name" tab.

I have the following . . .

Windusws uses the following information .. . yadda yadda.

Computer description: shop computer
Full computer name: SHOP
Workgroup: HOME

To rename this computer or join a workgroup, click Change.

I click Change, and it gives me . ..

Computer name:
SHOP (in a field)

Workgroup:
HOME (in a field)

There is a "more" button, which brings up "Primary DNS Suffix of this computer, which is blank, and NetBIOS computer name: SHOP.

I do not see a network identification wizard anywhere.

Okay, I'm making progress.

I can see the laptop from the main computer, but the main computer from the laptop. Sharing is enabled on both computers.

When I try to access the laptop it tells me I might not have permission, and the netork path was not found. But the name is correct.

Still can't ping either computer.

Do you have NetBUI enabled over TCI/IP? When you ping do you ping the IP address or the name?

NetBEUI is enabled.

When I ping I ping the IP address.

I didn't know you COULD ping the name. But that doesn't work either.

What should default gateway be set to?

Default gateway is for your internet connection, that should be your router/modem what ever you are using to connect to the interent. Do you have XP's firewall started on either of the computers? What are you using to connect them? Can either of them get on the internet? Are you just trying to share files?

The firewall is disabled.

They are connected with Cat5 cables running to a 10/100 switch.

Yes, they can both get on the internet with their modems. I am trying to share one connection between the two over the network though.

I'm trying to share files between the two as well sharing a dial-up connection.

WTF?

I shouldn't need a router to use Windows ICS. The PC's just have to be on a network.

Ah, ICS would do it, I think with all your problems you ought to just restart you configuring. I don't know what else to tell you. I haven't had that much problem networking XP Pro, XP Home, 95, and W2K box. I fyou want to give it one more shot, tell me from the start what you are trying to do and what all your settings are.

So do you have ICS enabled or not?

If you have ICS enabled on the first computer then you need to enable DHCP ("Obtain an IP address automatically") on the second computer.

As far as getting the two computers to see each other, have you tried conecting them directly? I believe you would just use a straight thru cable if you are using ICS, otherwise you would need a crossover cable.

Or maybe check to see if you are using the uplink port on the switch. If you are using ICS, I am thinking you should be connecting the computers through two regular ports.

Also (just to be sure) you have shared the folders/drives you want to access, right?
