Problems overclocking duron 600

I purchased this processor from ocz.safeshopper.com. They sold it pretested to overclock to 950Mhz. I've got an
OCZ monster II HSF
My processor runs at 36C. The processor does have the lead pencil markings on the L1 contacts. When I go into bios and change the multiplier to 7 or 6.5 and reboot I get no video. To fix this I turn the power off on the powersupply for 10 seconds or so. Clearing cmos doesn't fix the no video thing. I have tried erasing the L1 contacts and reconecting them with a conductive lead pencil. I still get the same results. At 600 Mhz the machine runs perfect. Does anyone have any ideas?

You say it was pretested at 950 but at what voltage?

Try upping the voltage when you change the multiplier.

Forgot to mention I already tried upping the voltage. 1.85. Still no go.

Edit- it does work at 1.85@600Mhz though.

I bought the almost the same setup from OCZ, did you disable the error hold? If you're using a PCI card try changing the slot maybe? I'm stumped too. All I did with mine was lay on the thermal grease, bump the multiplier up and the volt up.

i'm not extremely familar with the KT7-raid... but does it have lower then a 6x multiplier? if so can you underclock the cpu?

after that i'd say reset the to bios defaults/normal settings(again not sure whats it called in the abit bios) and then tried to oc?

then again.... i wouldn't be surprised if they sent you a bunk chip. ocstore is buy far one of the worst online resellers out there:eek:

Ya, I know they (ocz.safeshopper.com) suck. I've sent atleast 20 emails to them trying to get the heatsink I ordered with the board. It took them 2.5 months. They suck for other reasons too, but I won't waste the space. Everyone should stay away from this company. I'll try underclocking and let you know results within 30 minutes. Thanks everyone.

You said it runs at 600 fine, but did you try it at 650, or 700 before trying 950? Just throwing ideas out and giving a bump for a tough problem.

ok, I set multiplier to 5. reboot, same thing. shut the PS off for 10 seconds, turn it back on. It posts at 600Mhz. Go into bios and it is still set at 5x multiplier. Yes I do have the speed hold disabled. I am using an AGP graphics card. Also when I do setup defaults in bios, it doesn't get video on restart. I have to shut off the powersupply to get video again.

hmmmm, bad mobo????

Does anyone know what happens when the L1 bridges aren't connected and you try to change the multiplier???

Yes, tried it at 700 first, because I didn't have a very good HSF at the time. had the same results. The first HSF ran at 111-114F, not sure what that is in Celcius. I also updated to the UL bios about a month ago, but that didn't help either.

I agree it's probably not the greatest HSF, but 36C isn't too bad is it. I had originally ordered a different one, but they said they couldn't get that one anymore. 2 months after I was supposed to get the heatsink, as long as I got something that would work better than my cheap one was fine.

Did you try setting the multiplier to 9.5 with a frontside bus speed of 100? Generally if you up the frontside bus speed it tends to become less stable.

I have had the FSB set to 100. I haven't tried 9.5 multipler for a couple of months. It seems that anything other than the default 6x multiplier = 600Mhz results in no video.

If you can't even change the multiplier to 5 then perhaps it's not properly unlocked.

My duron600 @ 1000 and abit KT7 works fine from ocz. They may not have the greatest customer support but they do give what they claim.

hmmm, properly unlocked???? I've been over the duron overclocking guides at hardOCP and other places and am fairly certain I've done this right. I tested the pencil with an ohm meter to see if it was conductive, It was. I was careful not to bridge the contacts with the ones next to it. Could you explain a little more??? What do you think could be done wrong????

what measurement did you get with the ohm meter?

The resistance has to be less than about 9Kohm for it to function properly.

Try using a mechanical pencil. I've found people have the best luck with a 2B or BB hardneww 0.5mm mechanical pencil lead.

The pencil I used was a 0.7 mm mechanical pencil. With the ohm meter set to 20K the meter read .02

Any other ideas?

My thought is that possibly there is a short or break on the pins or traces on the motherboard that control the multiplier

Try erasing the pencil lead and re-doing it again with a maginifying glass. When I originally tried the pencil trick I got not video also, so I erased and tried again and it worked.

On a side note, isn't OCZ the place that everyone is always complaining about? They used to have a "0" rating on reseller ratings, but it is up to a perfect 7 out of 7 now. What gives?

It wouldn't suprise me that they got a 0. They've been a pain to deal with. I'll try remarking the processor again. I'll update within about 20 minutes.

Well, I tried remarking the processor again, still no luck. I took much care to make sure that the contacts were bridged, and that they didn't get bridged to the ones next to them. I also noticed this time that the second to last set of cantacts on L7 were bridged (must have been done at safeshopper), so I remarked those also. It sounds like this could be what is causing the problem, but it's already been marked 3 times. If nobody else has any ideas I'll try it again.

lol, I thought you did it three times till I realised it was a triple post. try erasing the l7 thing completely and try it.
