problems installing win98

Hi, I am having some problems installing win98. It installs almost all the way, but at the point where it restarts and updates system registry (less than a minute left in install) I get the following:

a warning pops up saying:

Java package Manager
unable to install Java packages from C:\windows\Java\classes\xmldso4.cab
parameters incorrect

I click on OK and then get the standard "this program has performed an illegal function" relating to the following:

Tapisrv
and
Regsvr32

Then I get an Error starting program message relating to version.dll

The cmputer restarts and when I try to boot from the HDD I get an Invalid system disk error.

I have tried installing 4 times now and I keep getting the same messages

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Ok, I finally got a chance to try intsalling with only the vid card and I am still having the same problems. The systems specs are: Celeron 566, GA-6VX7-4X mobo, seagate 9.1G factory refurb. (this one replaced a drive that wasn't working and seems to work fine as a storage drive in my other comp), Hercules terminator vid card, 128M Hyundai ram. The only component tha I haven't had running in another computer before is the motherboard. Do you think that might be the culprit? I think what I will do next is install windows on the HDD using my other computer and then move the HDD over to this setup.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Have a you done a complete format on the hard drive? You may have bad sectors on the harddrive, a reformat would mark the bad ones and therefore not use them.

I have formmated the drive about 5-6 times now and each time the drive is good. When I try to re-install windows over the intsallation that didn't work, it scans the disk and finds a whole bunch of bad and damaged fiels that it tries to fix. What is a low-level format, would this help maybe?

it may be just having trouble reading that xmldso4.cab file off the cd. Try cleaning the CD and make sure it is clean and scratch-free, or try using a different CD.

Ok, I installed windows on the HDD using my other computer and everything went well, I moved the HDD over to the other computer and it booted fine. I then installed the VIA 4 in 1 drivers and when I tried to reboot I got an invalid system disk message. I then moved the HDD back over to my other computer and it wouldn't boot there either. When I look at the contents of the drive it shows a couple of files with names that are made up of wierd characters. I think the problem is with the mobo, does anyone see any other possibilities?

It could be the mobo. Before you replace anything, though, try this: completely clear CMOS (pull the battery, set a jumper, or whatever your mobo manual says to do), maybe even reflash the BIOS with the latest released update (this is probably not really necessary, but could be included to be extremely thorough), boot to bootdisk, run fdisk /mbr, run fdisk and clear all partitions, reboot to bootdisk, create a new partition, reboot to bootdisk, format the new partition, and THEN install windows. Also, be sure to check all your hardware connections. If that does not work, I am 99% sure it is a hardware problem.

These drives (I assume its a cheetah) are cranky on some controllers. I had one that did the same thing...wouldn't boot, worked ok for storage...never did figure it out.
