Problem with the tip at a restaurant

My girlfriend and I went for a quick and cheap dinner at a local dumpling house the other night, and the total bill was $17.xx or so. I paid by check card, and wrote in a $6 tip (the waiter is a really nice old Asian guy, very attentive, and we stayed about 5 minutes after closing).

But I'm looking at my bank account summary, and I was only charged $19.05. I'm very sure that gratuity was not already added onto the bill. What gives?

Grrr. Maybe I should go over and give that dude four bucks. I don't know what went wrong.

Yeah, that's what I should have done, but I don't recall ever having this problem. It's annoying.

I probably will. He serves us almost every time we go over there.

I'm not sure if debit cards work the same as credit cards... but it could just be the authorization amount, give it a few days and see if it changes.

Edit: Actually, since they processed your check card as a credit card, I assume that's probably what it is. Give it a few days.

Okay, I hadn't thought of that. I don't know how they came up with that amount for authorization, though. I guess you're right.

Was the meal $17.32? Because $19.05 is exactly 10% more than that. 10% would be a pretty crappy tip though. Unless you're... well, it would be a pretty crappy tip.

They charge you the price of the meal initially, to make sure you have the money to cover it. Later on they'll charge you for the meal + tip.

Agreed. I just spent half an hour on the phone the other day for the exact same reason.
