during the indy 500 you can pay the police to escort you to the track parking. A lot of people do this because the traffic is so horrific (of course it just makes it worse for everyone else)

im not 99% certain, but one can hire off-duty police force to lead a convoy (ie. tour bus) , or block/redirect traffic (ie. superchurch)

if so, does anyone find it revolting? i understand that if, for the sake of safety and greater traffic flow, there is a need for the city (on its own) to dispatch officers for these functions then its okay... but for someone privately to pay for police officers to use squad vehicles and go through red lights, or shut down certains streets to the public in sake of some private event... that doesnt sit well with me

maybe its just me

Off duty police are not suthorized to take any offical action.

Bah, local church pays off duty police to come out, with police cars parked on the side of the road and direct traffic for all of their services. Local neighborhood traffic gets the shaft because someone wanted to build a damn jesus dome without beefing up the infrastructure.
