there was nothing really to prompt this - it just popped in my head while driving on the road.

im not 99% certain, but one can hire off-duty police force to lead a convoy (ie. tour bus) , or block/redirect traffic (ie. superchurch)

if so, does anyone find it revolting? i understand that if, for the sake of safety and greater traffic flow, there is a need for the city (on its own) to dispatch officers for these functions then its okay... but for someone privately to pay for police officers to use squad vehicles and go through red lights, or shut down certains streets to the public in sake of some private event... that doesnt sit well with me

maybe its just me

off duty? they couldn't use their cars and such then.

I have seen state troopers in PA escorting oversize load trucks on the highways before. Maybe they will escort musicians tour bus or such t prevent any problems.

You need a permit to close down roads.

most of the escorts you see for funerals are private escorts. They have them here, but they are NOT police. THey just have motorcycles with flashing lights.

so when theyre going slow, taking up the entire road, its illegal and liable for citation?

does that that issuance involve the local residents? ie, you live in new york, pay exhorbitant taxes for the roads and street, and then suddenly for 1 week you cannot drive down your street because some hollywood bozo pays to have it shut down to shoot a movie

no, they obtain permits allowing them to be escorts

Most of the funerals I see do not have a police escort, but some do. I do know that police occasionally escort farmers in this area who need multiple or all lanes of traffic in order to transport equipment, and if the police don't do it, uses friends/family of the farmer does it for them. I think that it would be in the best interest of the public to be warned that if they continue on their current course, they're going to have a head on collision with heavy equipment, rather than just stopping or pulling off the road.

I wonder what the actual laws are (in this state) for police escorts and road closures... might have to call one of my friends at the Sheriff's office tomorrow.

That shit pisses me off. The block off the crosswalk to let their endless line of cars pass. Last time that happened I said f' it and walked when the light turned green. Other people started walking across too after I crossed.

waiting 2-5 minutes is to much of a hassle to show a little respect?

Wow, you're too cool.

You should take that attitude over to the 'loin and really tell them what you think of them.

Then, in an ultimate swatch of irony, I won't wait to cross the street during your funeral.

No. I did permits as an engineer and we used our own judgement calls e.g. I would never shut down a busy stretch in the middle of the week. Everything was pushed toward the weekend or middle of the night.

This topic came up in discussion last night with my wife's grandfather (former LAPD captain). At least in his experience, most of the participants were off-duty police, and it was/is legal to block off the roads under that condition. My wife's step father also recalled when they were part of Ralph Edward's funeral, they (police or CHP) actually blocked off a portion of the 5 ahead of time to prepare for the procession.

He also recalled some movie producer (he worked in Hollywood) who wanted to redo a long stretch of Hollywood Boulevard with 30s/40s facades, including changing the traffic lights to the old fashioned signals, for use in a movie. For the former, the businesses agreed to do it, but for the latter - no way. Ignoring the fact they'd have to shut down the street for filming, most people wouldn't know what to do with the antique signaling systems.

OP, you're a fucking ant dude. We all are. When a bigger, more important ant comes along he gets the other ants moved out of his way to get through faster.

You don't like it....become the bigger ant.

haha

sometimes it's in the public's interest for there to be controlled escorting of crowd drawing machines (bands, celebs, presidents, etc.).

You have to sit down and think about these things before you start ranting like an idiot on a web forum. Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue if a Beatles like band didn't have police escort to take them out of town?

Many college sports teams use public on-duty police convoys to "protect" their tour buses as they travel from the airport to their destinations.

i find that a disgusting use of public resources, and a big waste of my fvcking time when traffic gets blocked to let a bunch of fvcking reject sumo wrestlers get to the stadium 30 seconds quicker. that said, it is possible that the teams are paying the city for this service, much like big special events pay the city to ensure police security. i just think it is ludicrous to give any special treatment to college sports players. we're not talking about the president, for christ sake.

funerals are often escorted by private security driving cop-style motorcycles. look closely and you'll see no badges and no blue lights.

Funeral processions are specifically addressed in the laws of many states. In many states a funeral procession can disregard a red light as long as the first car made it through on a green regardless of whether they have a fake cop leading them.

Here off duty officers are paid to escort. They are paid through the city, however and use police vehicles because of that.

Same here. It's not cheap...

Basically, it reduces the traffic hazard that would've been caused by lack of a police escort, and the expense of the unit dedicated to that issue is covered so the city doesn't have to pay for it.
