I might be off on this but if I remember fair use laws let you shar a copy of a audio tape(or CD) for free with a PERSONAL FRIEND and FAMILY. Not eveyone on the net.
Actually the fair use statute permitting a copy applies only to computer software. This is to permit backups (copies) of entire systems and networks for data protection and disaster recovery, and allows the owner to make a backup copy of computer programs/software in the event the original disks are lost, stolen, damaged, etc.
There is no, and never has been, any sort of "fair use" exemption to make copies of music. Not since the days of vinyl, not since the days of cassette, not ever. Its a complete myth.
However, that's not to say that making a copy of your music for the same reasons is 'illegitimate' or 'immoral' just because the law doesn't expressly allow it. I used to buy a CD then dub it to cassette, because my car and portable stereos were cassette, so I would dub a CD to cassette then listen to the cassette in my car.
I also had several CDs stolen out of my [ex] girlfriend's car. I did not consent to transfer my rights to that music, it was stolen from me. So do I feel like I'm doing something 'immoral' because I might downloaded those albums or make a copy of a friend's CD instead of being forced to pay for them twice? Nope.
