Makes me wonder if you could do this on a global scale you could alter the magnetic field of a planet to terraform it (hold an atmosphere in). I know its much more complicated than that..but you get the idea.

Well, it was pretty revolutionary ~50 years ago when we started using it for storing data on magnetic tape.
