sisq0kidd, why do you show the XL at $350, when the first link clearly shows it for $325? The OP was wrong, its $350 with a $25 instant saving, no mail in bs.

Thats a heck of a price on the XL, nice to see it drop so fast.

Whoops, didn't check the link. Just took the OP's word for it. 350 is still closer to 325 than 250 though 🙂

I was going for the 7800gt, should i get the xl now?

Well the GT still pretty much takes the board with performance. WIth AF, as Ackmed said, the ATI cards will look better (fully programmable AF and AA). ATI has AVIVO which, when the drivers are released with not only help with Decode (WHat Nvidia does) but encode.

So really right now i would still go for the GT unless you really care about the mip map bands, or you do a lot of encoding (in which case you may want to just invest in a stand alone card).

n00b

It does have better AF, calling him is newb is not helping the thread.

It is pretty ironic though you calling someone else a newb... since you have a 200Mhz FSB CPU, and 166Mhz ram...

lol, pwned

Hans teh nVidiot can't tell people not to buy ATi because they now have SM 3.0, so his new strategy is calling them n00bs

Trolls like him shoulda been banned long ago

with a competitive price and hardware accelerated transcoding the XL just jumped back into the running. had been set on a 7800GT.

Looks like Nvidia is winning the price/performance with Ati. Way to go competition!!!

Battlefield2
ATI 1800XL @ 1600x1200_4xAA : 57.7 fps / $325 = 0.18 frames per second per dollar
7800 GT @ 1600x1200_4xAA : 56.2 fps / $280 = 0.20 frames per second per dollar

Far Cry
ATI 1800XL @ 1600x1200_4xAA : 60.3 fps / $325 = 0.19 frames per second per dollar
7800 GT @ 1600x1200_4xAA : 63.1 fps / $280 = 0.22 frames per second per dollar

I was about to post the same...but you beat me too it. The only thing about the 7800GT right now is I see the image shimmering thing if Iput the drivers to anything but "high quality"...I wish they'd fix that.

EDIT: and lets look at stuff like doom3...AND the fact that most people getting the GT/XL are resolution limited...thus making the 7800GT even better.

I knew it was only a matter of time until they priced these cards more attractively. I got my popcorn ready and waiting for the usual onslaught of negativity by Rollo

What's "too hot"?

It's only too hot if it crashes, otherwise, the temp doesn't matter.

If you try to overclock maybe, but that's a whole different story, with aftermarked coolers, etc.

I do agree on the noise though. My X800XL was too loud, and required an aftermarked cooler. I know the X1800XL would be too loud for my tastes, but it's possible I'd find the 7800GT annoying as well. But, there's definitely an added cost in cooling for the X1800XL (for me anyway).

Still though, that's a pretty good deal (but I think the 7800GT is a slightly better buy).

Spouting out those rash comments with no basis, doesn't help anyone or accomplish anything!

-Kevin

Ah, I see the fan club is here though. I wasn't bashing him or anything, more like just predicting the future. And what do you mean no basis???? Like he isn't known for that Forum wide. sheesh. drink a  and relax buddy. I'm a good guy

Cmon people Kevin is being logical, if Rollo hasn't said anything why do you always bring him up, let his posts speak for himself.

Ok, guys I apologize. I started it and I'll end it. I'll keep my dumb comments to myself. I infact like Rollo and respect his knowledge, and even his character(money donations and all out honesty). Sometimes I think He holds up the rainbow colored nvidia flag thats all. I do it too (more of an ATI fan myself) but a little less flamboyant. Look I even own a 7800 gtx and before this I had a 6800 GT.

If the guy comments he comments. If you disagree with him, or the way he conducts himself fine. But what is bringing him or his actions up in every thread going to do?

A. Bring more comments that seem to annoy you
B. Create problems.

It is the mere fact that his views (yes they tend to favor Nvidia) differ from some of yours). And i am equally sure that he doesn't wake up think to himself "What can i do to piss off some people in AT today" and do it.

Like i said it doesn't do anyone any good.

(I never said you weren't a good guy lava, i am sure you are 🙂, but those comments from people get annoying, and they aren't even directed at me)

I agree with everything you said except the temps deal. Even though a high temp by itself doesn't effect performance (except OCing potential), it still may effect longevity of the card (i.e., a hot running GPU/RAM is more likely to burn out before a cooler running GPU/RAM).

Everything considered...I'd by the OEM X800XL for ~$240ish (i.e., a 7800GT retail is worth ~$30 more to me than this OEM X800XL).

FIrst off, the GT wasn't too loud at all...I used rivatuna to play with the fan speed...and was able to make whisper quiet, but it wasn't very loud to start out,

Yeah, temps affect longevity. If you are upgrading every 1/2 year, well, you need help anyway. (help finding something better to spend your money on...or finding a place to stick it and get interest.)

If you like to overclock I think the X1800XL is looking pretty good. Seems like most 7800GTs are topping out at ~475-485MHz on the core and ~1100-1200MHz on the memory with stock cooling. I haven't kept up on the X1800XLs lately but the first results looked fairly promising.
