GTX280 at $500 still junky.
GTX280 if it was $300 to at max $400 = just right considering 4850's in CF or 8800GT's in SLI beat it for around that price range.
I consider anything overly priced compared to other competitive parts on the market at the exact same time, junk. I consider anyone who would brazenly always buy said part for any reason at that price stupid.
Now, for some people was it actually cost effective to purchase a GTX280? Yes. why? Not everyone paid $650 and some through the step up program found deals, others got theirs through connections and what not.
The GTX280 as a card is fine, as a whole it is not because the price tag factors into owning anything in my opinion. Always had and always will. If I had found a way to pick up a GTX280 for the same price I picked up my 4850's in CF then I would have. Would I still think the charging schema done for card thus far has been correct? Not a chance.
Capitalism for what it is, is what is it. I don't begrudge anyone trying to make as much as they can get for a product. I won't buy anything I don't feel is worth it or the vast majority can tell isn't worth it. Since the 48xx series and the GTX2xx series came out practically at the same time, buying the NV card this gen around the moment on release for anything other than bragging rights about how deep your wallet is I find pretty stupid.
Notice, I'm not calling anyone out or pointing at anyone specifically. I'm being broad in my claim because this goes for any product put out. Anyone that blindly opens their wallet for a product deserves the chagrin they get.
Again, I'm not calling anyone that owns a GTX280 a fanboy or an idiot. I'm calling anyone that actually PAID $650 for one that. Because well, they are.
8800 GTX was an extremely 'cost effective' card. I doubt anyone who spent $600 on its launch day would regret the purchase if he/she still has it. I feel stupid for selling mine after less than a half-year's of use thinking something better was around the corner. Early adopters of 8800 GTX got their money's worth.
GTX 280 is still the king of hill, and there was no way of knowing price drops to early adopters, as well as what AMD's offering will be like. On what ground you name-call others is beyond me. Sure you can call GTX 280 = junk, and that is your right. Name-calling others, isn't. Everyone has different priorities, not to mention different sizes of wallets.
Go re read my posts, because I haven't called anyone a name. I've called a CLASS or category of people a name, but that's like saying all people who drive without insurance are stupid. Perfectly acceptable to do so and both are claim I'll stand by until the day I die. Hell, George Carlin became famous off making fun of categories of people.
Now, if you are offended because you happen to fall into one of the categories of people I have so far called stupid, then so be it. On the other hand, I have been named called by having someone call me out on my intelligence when all I've done is state an opinion of mine that happens to differ from theirs. Great.
On another note, to the person asking about my experience with CF, I'll explain what I have.
I have 6 computers right now. My main has the best setup which includes and overclocked q9450 and 4850's in CF. Paid less than $300 for the pair. I also have a OC'd 8400 with a 4870 that I paid about $260 for. My other comps are OC'd opty 165s at 3Ghz each with 8800 GTX's. One GTX clocks at 660/2100 and the other at 640/2000. I paid $240 for one card and $200 for the other a little bit later. My other comp has an x850 xtpe on a single a64 3800+ and the last comp is a laptop with integrated graphics. Neither matter for this disuccsion but I'm stating what I have so people know at least have an ample room for comparisons.
I also had a single 8800 GT before I switched out to the 8800 GTX, paid $230 for the GT before selling it for the same and getting the original GTX for $240.
Now, in comparison with the following games, my 4850's CF works WONDERFULLY! The games I've made comparisons with on my soyo 24" MVA LCD at 19x12 are AoC (for the day I had it before the sub ran out when I got these cards), Crysis, Bioshock, Sins of a solar empire, Shadowrun, Gears of War, and Mass Effect. I haven't done much else though but I have a lanparty this weeked so who knows what I'll end up trying as more then likely I'll bring the 4 good comps because other guys there don't always have the best to play the rest of the games we may decide upon. Also, we'll more then likely try a bunch of older games as well.
