It occured to me today that the solution to illegal immigration has been looking the country in the face for years. In the US we see hard-working people who want to be here and provide for their family but are not documented. We also see similar numbers (?) of people who are on welfare and not because they can't work but because hell they don't really care. I say trade them. Keep the illegals and for each welfare recip who gets sent off to the Yukon on some compound to learn to live off the land the country can give a greencard to the illegal. It's a win for everyone.

Send home the illegals and cut off welfare funding. Shit solves itself.

Pretty much hit that nail on the head. The solution is so simple, just do it. It's a problem that will fix itself.

Lets see how much we can jam through regardless of if it is good legislation or not. Something is ALWAYS better than nothing I guess.

More often than not, making a decision and moving ahead is better than not making one, unless you like status quo.

LOL - Thats a new one - The government forced me to break the law.

Can put that one up there with "The dog ate my homework".

Some...yes. Under 18 and your mother brings you into the country with her? I'd say that is forced. That is just one example though. Some are forced in order to find jobs and provide for their families. Mexico isn't exactly a booming economy you know. Much of SA/CA is worse than that to boot.

You seem to miss the point. We've tried the route that starts with 'noone forced them to break the law' and ends with the only real action taken being selective increased enforcement that statistically amounts to not doing a damn thing and letting the next admin/congress handle the problem. Look at the facts: 1) there are too few slots available for immigrants or those who want to hire them (day laborers, etc). 2) There are already many here who want to go through the process to better themselves so that they can integrate, yet access to these methods causes significant financial hardship and buerocratic nightmares (which happens to those already here legally...heh).

Deal with these issues. Open up slots and help them sign up. Let them pay a fine, go through background checks, register themselves, learn English, and wait the required time like anybody else. If this process is made more reasonable, efficient, and transparent then we shouldn't have the kind of problems we see now. This is getting out of hand. Those who refuse - fuck 'em.

Sorry, I didn't read the bill. I just voted on it.

Funny to see the wingnuts still not seeing the hole they're digging themselves with immigration. One minute they're all for legal immigration, the next minute they're saying they don't want bills that would legalize illegals, perhaps because the word "amnesty" is attached, who the hell knows. When an immigration bill is passed in 2010, and if Repubs are strongly opposed to it, they'll be a permanent minority in Congress until they move left. Using terms like anchor babies also helps the left's cause. Like stealing candy from a baby.

If the current state of political discourse in the US is anything to go by, immigration reform will likely resemble a Theater of the Absurd.

As someone who is INTIMATELY familiar of how legal immigration works in this country...I would be all for a bill that gave amnestly...with TWO caveats: the prospective immigrants go through the same background checks that legal immigrants do, and that they are NOT given citizenship immediately, but rather a conditional green card, just like legal immigrants do.

We did that 25 (or whatever) years ago and it was "the last time".

I would be all for what you purpose with the stipulation that the legislation include enforcement on all future cases and that this is the LAST time amnesty would be granted.

You need to read up on Reagan's amnesty. It did NOt include what I listed.

Awesome. This issue needs to dealt with if we're going to have true UHC.
I agree but I don't see it getting resolved in a way that will allow us to get to Universal Health Care.

Can we have ONE thread without healthcare brought into it? Man people are in a fucking frenzy....

sorry but there are going to be another 20 million people on the healthcare dole. The government probably hasn't even added these numbers into their projected costs.

You must be new to politics. You could not be more wrong. Nothing is ALWAYS better than something, the current healthcare 1000 page thing is proof of that.

right, he should have finished all that and much much more in only 6 months in office inheriting the worst economy since the great depression. He should have had our troops out of Iraq, found Osama Bin Laden and cured cancer and landed on Mars at least by now right?

I really love your posts for nothing but comic relief. Its like watching the Office - you are embarrasingly and awkwardly continuing to post in spite of how rediculous you look. Just like Michael Scott - no self awareness at all. its gutwrenching, but i cant look away, I have to see what rediculous thing you post next LOL.

As long as the first paragraph of the bill includes one-way tickets home and the end of anchor-baby policies, I'm all for it.

Agreed. None of this watered down shit. Enforce the laws and get rid of the anchor babies.

Small govt, damnit!!!

Oh... wait.

I hope we provide a path to citizenship with a minor penalty. And streamline the process for people to come to this country. Kicking out 12-20 million people simply wont happen. It is an impossibility.

Actually that's a good point, when Obama gives amnesty to the illegals and marries it to his healthcare reform, it should do wonders for the deficit.

One of the primary responsibilities of the federal government is to protect the states/borders from invasion, and we're being invaded.
