As Bush arrived, the crowd ? estimated by police at about 700 ? booed and chanted "Bush go home!" Some protesters pounded on the sides of the buses, but no one was injured and the crowd dispersed soon after the president's 15-minute stop.

I was there, and they were banging on MARTA (public transportation) buses. It's a protest, I don't expect them to go around killing people but I think a bit of banging and shouting is okay.

Especially given that these busses were intentionally parked to block the demonstrators from getting closer. It doesn't seem terribly surprising some might pound on the sides of busses being used as walls.
 
And was there no other time that Bush could have gone to legitimately pay his respects without making it a fiaso?

Hardly- just going thru the motions so that his campaign nets a higher % from the trip. Southern blacks aren't voting for him, anyway, having heard his message loud and clear- "STFU, get to the back of the bus."

Bush and the whole Republican strategy panders to southern whites- it worked for Nixon, and it's worked ever since- the infamous Republican "Southern Strategy" that plays on latent racism and resentment of federal authority...
