USC is ranked #1 in both the AP and the Coaches poll.

With good reason, 3 straight National Championships. Not to mention a good portion of their team from last year is returning.

only two straight, buddy
only one straight, buddy

Whoa, we got an LSU fan in the house? National Champs aren't decided by the National Championship game in college football.

The National Champs are currently decided by the BCS Championship game. USC won it last year. LSU won it the year before. (I'm not a LSU fan btw)

only according to the AP and Pete Carroll

Meh. U$C. Now who remembers the triple overtime 34-31 win over USC and rushing the field?? Wow that was a glorious win.

Nope, they're decided by who's ranked no. 1 in the polls at the end of the season. The reason a BCS bowl is called the "National Championship" game each year is because the Coaches poll has a contract with the BCS that they'll vote whoever wins that game as their no. 1. The AP poll can vote differently if they so choose.

Nope. All the BCS conferences agreed to the BCS Championship formula (as flawed as it is). Thus, even if the AP votes differently, LSU was still the National Champs that year.

Prior to the BCS there was no formal agreement. The conferences played in bowls and the newspapers picked the championship. This formula no longer applies.

Not really. Better to be ranked as soon as possible in the year, preferably before the season starts and as high as possible.
The longer the season goes on, the more entrenched in the rankings the top teams are, and the harder for a team to work its way into the top 10.

Hook 'em! But I do agree we may be a tad overrated... :(

Damnit, wtf do we have Louisiana-Lafayette in the schedule? That's just stupid. It doesn't give any reality check to the Ohio State game right after that, and we'll be too pompous going into the arguably most important game of the season.

I think Teddy Ginn is gonna run all over us a la Adrian Peterson style.

Boo. :(

And unfortunately, I don't think there's any way we're going to take the #1 spot either.

But in any case, go go go Horns!

Lowest starting ranking for FSU Seminoles in many years. :(
It's to be expected, though, since we lost God as our quarterback and aren't even sure what our team name will be. :)

edit: seems that our "hostile and abusive" name isn't so hostile and abusive after all and we get to keep it. Thank goodness - Criminoles wasn't going to have the same ring. ;)

No, Michigan is ranked too high. Ohio State routed them, Texas slaughtered them, and they're top 5?
Texas "slaughtered" Michigan? You must not have watched the same game everyone else did.

We lost God, but still have the Savior (Xavier Lee). We'll probably end up with Weatherford though.

You gotta come to Kinnick though baby, if you get past us I think you'll take the Big Ten.

I think tOSU is extremely overrated, based on the season they had last year. They picked it up at the end of the year but they lost to a 6-6 Northwestern team after starting 3-0 and were absolutely manhandled by the beloved Hawks.

I agree that Iowa is underrated a bit, I think 8 or 9 would be better. Returning Drew Tate, who carried this offense (74.9 rushing yards/game last year, one of hte worst in the NCAA after losing the top five running backs) will be back and should be playing with a vengence. He was named Big Ten Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

I think Iowa has a 50/50 chance of going undefeated. They have three extremely tough games (@Columbus, hosting Mich, and @West Lafayette) and a few tough games (@Iowa State and @Madison for Alvarez's last game), but if they overcome and go undefeated and don't go to Pasadena, it will be worse then Auburn last year.

How the fsck did Kansas get a vote in the USA Today poll and Missouri didn't? Missouri will pound them into the ground this year.
