Why everyone keep saying you need super cooling to OC P4e?

I have $10 80mm (2500rpm only) Maddog HSF from microcenter and it does the job perfectly and also very very quiet.
I have P4 2.8E currently @ 3.5Ghz @ 250Mhz FSB @ 47C idle/ 65C full load on Abit IC7

Sure it is bit hotter compare to Northy, but not that bad.

Timekeeper, how did you read the temp? From the mobo sensor? Why am I reading 58 idle and 73 load from 3.0E w/o OC? And I'm not even sure if 73C is the max reading.

Abit IC7 has new BIOS to correct the temp reading.
Then using ABITEQ to read your temp.

If you are serious about buying a Prescott.

Wait until end of June, Intel will be releasing new chipsets and LGA775 Prescotts.

That way you have more upgrade options. IMO with the new Grantsdale chipset, the Prescott will outperform the Northies.

Second that, remember that lil article that was posted about Prescott being faster than the equal Northwood on the ATi chipset? Well it wouldn't amaze me if the same is true with 915 and 925x. (using a true CPU bench, if there is such a thing, i know PCI express ruins the gaming compairsons.)

All the most recent tech reviews at such sites as www.tomshardware.com, this site, and others I have seen give a significant boost to Prescott. Suggest you read those before you make a decisioin. Northbridge is definitely considered old technology even though it will hand around for another couple of years.
