I am building a computer for a relative. This computer won't be overclocked and won't be used for gaming, but will be used for dvd burning/encoding etc... Thanks.

Northwood....

less heat + less money + just as good (if not better) performance = teh winnar

heat is such an issue but then again if it's going to be at stock... why not get a prescott? not that much more expensive and has the extra cache... doesn't the extra cache help with encoding?

Prescott is useless on S478 motherboards. Don't invest in Prescott until S775 motherboards are released in the next 6-8 weeks.

If you can get a good overclocker, the Prescott is NOT a bad choice. It definitey has an advantage in encoding. It shaved a little time off of my DvD encoding. They are warmer, but I am not going with the hype that has been reported about how "bd" it is. My Prescotts (I have had 3: 2 - 2.8E and 1 3.0E) all ran warmer at idle, but were a little cooler at full load. So, if you get a good clocker, they are not a bad chip. If you are gonna keep her at default... northwood for sure.

Are you telling me that you got rid of that 3.0C that would do 4.0ghz? Man, that's one chip I would have killed to have a chance at buying.

hehe... i change chips as much as I do my under.... well, never mind. Let's just say I go through alot of them... though I am likely done now until the new socket comes out OR I get to good a deal to pass up... hehe

Are you saying that you're happier with a 2.4C running at ~3.3ghz than with that 3.0 at 4.0?:Q

No, I need to change that, but I am waiting for my new board to get here (Abit Max3) and I have a 3.2C that I am working with. It does 3.8 pretty nice. I never got my 3.0 totally stable at 4.0.

i would say go for the northwood because it performs better
my first prescott was DOA
i had to return it and got this one
this prescott performs about like a 2.8ghz northwood when overclocked to 3.2ghz
the northwood is more powerfull despite the extra cache on the prescott
the longer pipeline basically cripples the prescotts chips (won't matter once they get over 4ghz, or get new chipsets/socket)
the extra cache is pretty much a non-issue because of the other changes to the chip which pretty much work against it's possible benefits
also the prescott is very hot (but i wouldn't expect this to be an issue at stocks speeds)

the gap between northwood and prescott does appear to be lower in multimedia and encoding/decoding type things tho
also if you feel that sse3 is a worthwhile investment then i would suggest getting the prescott

you will love that board
absolutely great
well built, and you can't beat the cooling system
the nb heatsink is also pretty good
