I love how everyone is chastising the customer for someone else not doin their very very important job. Not everyone has th capacity to research Mede on the interwebs before taking it. Maybe she saw the last name and didn't look at it carefully enough. It's partially her bad cause mistakes do happen. But the role of the pharmacist is to make sure the correct drug is being dispensed for the proper condition and that it goes to the right person. This is why they're paid and paid well. The technician just hands that shit bu the pharmacist oversees everything. You guys yelling at this woman are pretty much saying that you should double check everything your doctor says too. Not everyone has the capacity to do this that's why we rely on PROFESSIONALS. When hey fuck up he consequences are usually horrible so they should hold the most responsibility since their fucking job IS to prevent the average Joe from fuck ups like this.

If everyone was capable of having the same knowledge as a pharmacist or doctor, we wouldn't need them to dispense our drugs and/or to make sure we're getting what the doctor described. The pharmacist is supposed to back check what the doctor prescribed as well, to make sure it makes sense for the condition. Yeah, it's good practice to check in full to make sure. But this isn't a fast food delivery order where items might be missing. Their only job and goal is, to make sure you are passed exactly what you should be getting so you don't fucking die. Hence all the checks and time it takes to process pharmacy orders. If I knew the rate of a pharmacist getting my prescription wrong was even 98%, I would NOT go there. How do you know what the tablets should look like? You're going to look that up too? You have to understand that not everyone is as "smart" as everyone on these forums. This isn't like those people that sue because they burned themselves on coffee. I don't know what exactly the label said, but since the last name was identical and the first name was similiar, it could make for some confusion (which is exactly where the pharmacist and pharmacy tech FUCKED UP). She has no responsibility for the drug name. I'm admitting that she shoulda looked more carefully at the name but since it was similiar it's slightly understandable why she might have made the mixup, BUT the responsibility of getting it right first is of the pharmacist since his job is to prevent, frauds, abuse, and most importantly death. You don't fuck around when your job is to keep people from dying.

Medicine is not common knowledge and count how many times you each have gotten the wrong prescription. I went to University of the Pacific and most of my friends are practicing pharmacists and they've described to me exactly what they gotta do at their job and why they would be at blame for this.

Methotrexate comes in 2.5mg pills. They're tiny. You need something like 25mg to abort a child; it's more common to prescribe 50 to 75mg. Unless this lady downed the entire bottle of methotrexate, it's likely that the child will be fine.

Listening on the news, even if the drug doesn't cause an abortion, it greatly increases the odds that the child will develop a birth defect.

They also come in much larger dosages than 2.5mg.

Trexall™ (methotrexate tablets), for oral administration, are available in 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg and 15 mg strengths.

The pharmacist didn't screw up at all here people. The lady walked up and said her name was Mareena Silva and the tech reached into the bags and found one for "Maureen Silva" and no one noticed the difference.

Happens more than you might think. Normally the tech should ask for the phone number or date of birth to make sure they match, but who knows what happened in this care.

And since Mareena is pregnant for the first time she is probably taking stuff that she has never taken before so wouldn't even know what it looks like etc etc.

In the end the lady is getting a lot of money for this screw up. Could easily turn into a million plus, especially if the baby dies or has permanent damage done to it. If the baby comes out with serious problems and needs medical attention for the rest of its life Safeway will most likely be paying for all those needs.
 
I feel sorry for her but she has a lot of the responsibility in this. she didn't read the label and make sure its correct.

EVERY prescription i have has my name, address, and doctor on it. Not to mention fuck silly me i want to know what i'm putting in my body.

you don't need to be a doctor to check the name address etc.
 
If he gave her any other medicine and the child miscarriaged/birthed deformed. You wouldn't even see an article in the back of a newspaper.

I still fail to see how millions of people unable to have babies makes anything I said less true? It is still harder to make a million dollars than it is to make another kid. BILLIONS of people can't make or won't make a million dollars, millions won't have kids.

Fucked up, but the title of the thread makes it sound ridiculous, when it was really just a case of name mix up and the drug that's primarily used to treat one condition also has a secondary use as an abortion drug. AyashiKaibutsu's commet was pretty spot on - if it was any other drug, you would never see it in the paper.

Sucks that the pharmacy gave the wrong perscription to someone with a similar name. But besides the pharmacy putting better protocols in place to prevent this (eg: asking for address or phone number as secondary confirmation), you should read what you get, make sure the address matches, the drug name matches what your doctor prescribed, read some of the info that comes with prescriptions (mainly, side effects).

You don't even glance at the bottle to make sure the med's name is the same as the one that was prescribed? This is just about automatic for me. I'm not saying you have to read each and every line of the drug info sheet they give you (though this is not a bad thing to do) but I would at least make sure the name matches.
