I am going to get one.
My DC game collection keeps growing (over 120 games), thanks to BitTorrent

We don't condone that here. Grab a demo disk & if you like it, buy it. The gaming industry is one of the few, where quality is always being produced. Support them.

I am not sure how we can support the gaming devs of DC. Most of the games you find for DC are 1) used 3) rarely new 2) go for rediculous prices on ebay or 4) can't find them, period. So what choice does one have? If you buy them used, i don't see how that helps sega (or whoever).

I don't download games for xbox, ps2, gc, etc. But i am not sure about the DC....if i find the games used/new, i would buy them, otherwise its the other method...

Honestly, it's a dead system, downloading games for it is no different than downloading Nintendo ROMS.

There is probalby not a huge market on those games anyway so who would be losing out? only reason ppl download the games are because there free.. just like the emulators.

i wouldn't even think about playing those games, but since they are free i'm interested.

BTW: haven't downloaded any emulators in couple years... all the sites i linked are gone, any ideas on where they moved? mame... or any new ones you guys know of?

Dang, I did not know the dreamcast still had life to it.

So how hard is it to set the DC up as a DIVX player or something?

Don't bother. It can barely play VCDs acceptably. The DiVX playback I saw was only smooth with VERY low resolution files.

This is a very good deal for Xmas gift for kids. They don't need xbox or ps2. It makes no different to them and there are plenty of good games still available on DC.

That's what I did 2 (or 3?) years ago when Toys r Us and other stores had them for $49.99 new. The systems I bought are still going strong, but don't get as much use anymore since they have also Xbox and GC systems now.

they've also got a page where you can choose 15 used dreamcast games for $50, even choose a vmu card in place of one of the games . . . hmmm . . . i've been quite happy with my pc for a long time now, havent bought a console system since the original nintendo, but this looks quite tempting :)

I'm thinking about buying one, but I've had two DCs (both bought used) that failed on me within several months. I think it might have been because I switched between DC games (GD-ROMs) and emulators (CD-Rs) frequently, and I heard that messes up the calibration in the laser. Does anyone know if this is true, and if it is, whether it can be fixed? Thx

CptObvious: I don't think that causes the problem. Mine is going on 3 years under similar use. I bought a 2nd DC already as a backup ($15 in 1/2 price credits + $1.99 shipping earlier this year), so it doesn't really matter to me. :D

The earlier Dreamcasts played burned games. At some point (can't remember the dates), the players would no longer play anything but the store bought discs. I have two DC's that are made before the cutoff date, so mine play the burned discs. My advice is try and go to your local store where they have them and check the dates on the machines. I'm sure you can find out when Sega changed the machines so they could no longer read burned discs.

You can't just copy a game disc like a music disc. You do need software. It's been so long that I can't even remember what type of software. I started doing it and then when Sega closed out all of the DC stuff, I bought a bunch of games for $10 or so. The work that you had to do wasn't worth it to me to copy discs. Plus, there is some compression with some of the games, so the quality wasn't there. The game discs are a higher capacity than a cd.

I'm sure you can find more information by doing google searches.

DiscJuggler was generally used for the games.

I have a launch day Dreamcast (9/9/99) that is still going fine, although it has admittedly seen limited use for the past few years.

You can't copy a production game (easily), but if you have an already backed up game, it can be copied. The date on not playing backups is December 2000 and later - I have one manufactured 12/2000 that will not work and one manufactured before that and it does work.

here is a quote from the dcemulation website that says that all dreamcasts do work for playing backup games: "It has been determined all models, that were previously thought un-working, infact do work that were in this list. So this concludes that so far, all DC's work :)"

I have a feeling that they know what they are talking about since they have been dealing with dreamcasts day in and day out since their release. At first, I thought one of my dreamcasts didnt work since it was manufactured after the cutoff date mentionned above but in fact it did work. The only reason it didnt work at first was due to my stupidity and my lack for understanding information on the web on how to backup a cd! :)

There actually is a change between the pre- and post- cutoff date model (nov 2000, i believe). The later ones would not boot copied games with a particular track order.

So what is everybodies favorite multiplayer DC games? I've got four controllers but few games which utilize all four. Any good four player racing games? I've got 4x4 evo and another rally game, but they run pretty slow. Anything like mario kart? Any good party games besides sports games?

Grab a couple of light guns and play House of the Dead 2. ;) It's not longer that much fun for myself, but about anyone can easily have fun with it, even some of my friends who don't play many games. When dealing with more than 2 players the graphics start to really degrade. (Unreal Tournament) With 2 players you get all the great fighting games. Wish they'd ported Goldeneye over to it.

You can get a VGA adapter for this system and hook it up to a monitor and the graphics are excellent! Night and day difference compaired to a tv hookup.
