Prayers needed

Her name is Monique, she is 17 years old and she just went into the hospital with very serious and previously unknown diabetes. Doctors say it is very bad and organ failure may have already began. Until now she has been in perfect health as she is active and athletic.

So if you could say a prayer to God, Allah, Buddha, or your deity of choice it would be greatly appreciated.

I will update as I know more

Update 1: last night she was getting better under induced coma with diabetes level going from 900~500 and dropping. I dont know what that means but now she is still in the induced coma and needs dialysis. Docs don't know if she will wake up. So I ask you ATOT, keep a young girl in your thoughts, prayers, or hearts this new year. It might not help anything (ATOT athiests) but it certainly won't hurt anything either.

Update 2: She stayed in the coma longer than expected and is still in the ICU, but prograss has been very slow. Now she is slightly alert and has moved, blinked, smiled a little and her breathing tube should be removed tomorrow if all continues to go well. Doctors do not know the extent of the brain stem damage yet. Only time will tell.

Let's be honest. In all likelihood, prayers WON'T help the girl. There is plenty of research showing patients who are "prayed for" don't get any better, any quicker than patients who don't receive prayers. What will help the girl is modern technology, her natural physical strength and resistance to deal with bodily stress, and the support of close family (being in the room, providing comfort).

it has nothing to do with hostility towards atheists. it's hostility toward insensitive douchebags who use someone's misfortune as an opportunity to disparage their beliefs.

Maybe it hasn't gotten through your thick head that most of the people who are attacking him ARE atheists?? Perhaps there's a reason why they're attacking him OTHER than the fact that he is atheist. Think about it and maybe the answer will come to you, though I wouldn't bet on it.

Actually, the guy wasn't "disparaging" anyone's beliefs. He was simply pointing out the obvious, i.e., there is no convincing evidence that "prayer" makes one shred of difference in the outcome of a serious illness. Christians and other assorted theists are becoming far too hypersensitive, it's got to the point where you can't make a simple statement of fact (i.e., there is no good evidence prayers improve health outcomes) without being accused of attacking christian beliefs. :roll:

If you want to do something to actually help people in this situation, donate some cold hard cash to diabetes research. What if everyone in this thread who offered a prayer also went and paypal-ed $20 to diabetes research.

I wish her the best. I for one hate diabetes. It has affected my family quite a bit, all of my parent's sisters and brothers on both sides have it.

Thank you for the kind words and prayers for those who posted seriously. And for the athiests who opened a thread titled prayers needed just to crap it DIAF.

I'm told she went into the hospital with a level of 900 and is now doing a bit better in an induced come around 500. Apparently anything above 200 is bad.
