you're an idiot.

Most people here in ATOT do care, and I will say a prayer for your cousin.

Sorry but I agree, prayers in reality won't do a thing. I do hope things turn out to be ok though.

Unless *anyone* can prove prayers don't do a thing.......shut up.

My thoughts and *PRAYERS* are with your cousin. I wish her the best, and she'll do well, and recover.

Yup, same here, I wasn't trying to start a flamefest or anything, I just find it well.... silly. I can however say, I hope the odds are on her side.

Thanks for the support guys, no new updates from family yet tonight. I'm not a religious guy either but 17 is way too young to be this sick so anything helps.

What kind of comment is that?! The last thing they need to hear is a snide, rude, nasty, low blow comment like the one that came out of your mouth. Are you stupid or did you just not realize how much saying something like that hurt another person, especially when they're worried about a critically ill family member.

I'm really surprised at the level of hostility expressed towards atheists on this forum.

Let's be honest. In all likelihood, prayers WON'T help the girl. There is plenty of research showing patients who are "prayed for" don't get any better, any quicker than patients who don't receive prayers. What will help the girl is modern technology, her natural physical strength and resistance to deal with bodily stress, and the support of close family (being in the room, providing comfort).

That's neither here nor there for the purposes of this thread. Go hump a dingo you insensitive, Australian troll.

To the OP, I hope the very best for your cousin.

I have no problem with atheists. It's about timing. This thread is the WRONG place to say something like that. It's just in-appropriate, plain and simple.

That being said, I'm dropping it for that very reason.

Yo the OP, I'm glad she's doing slightly better. Any improvement is a good sign, so remain hopeful.

Her name is Monique, she is 17 years old and she just went into the hospital with very serious and previously unknown diabetes. Doctors say it is very bad and organ failure may have already began. Until now she has been in perfect health as she is active and athletic.

So if you could say a prayer to God, Allah, Buddha, or your deity of choice it would be greatly appreciated.

I will update as I know more

Update: last night she was getting better under induced coma with diabetes level going from 900~500 and dropping. I dont know what that means but now she is still in the induced coma and needs dialysis. Docs don't know if she will wake up. So I ask you ATOT, keep a young girl in your thoughts, prayers, or hearts this new year. It might not help anything (ATOT athiests) but it certainly won't hurt anything either.

Keep hope. Her youth lends her strength.
Have someone tell her just how many people are pulling for her.

it has nothing to do with hostility towards atheists. it's hostility toward insensitive douchebags who use someone's misfortune as an opportunity to disparage their beliefs.

Actually, the guy wasn't "disparaging" anyone's beliefs. He was simply pointing out the obvious, i.e., there is no convincing evidence that "prayer" makes one shred of difference in the outcome of a serious illness. Christians and other assorted theists are becoming far too hypersensitive, it's got to the point where you can't make a simple statement of fact (i.e., there is no good evidence prayers improve health outcomes) without being accused of attacking christian beliefs.

If you want to do something to actually help people in this situation, donate some cold hard cash to diabetes research. What if everyone in this thread who offered a prayer also went and paypal-ed $20 to diabetes research.

Maybe prayers won't help the patient. But family members can find strength through prayers and spirituality.

And you're still a douche.

Thank you for the kind words and prayers for those who posted seriously. And for the athiests who opened a thread titled prayers needed just to crap it DIAF.

I'm told she went into the hospital with a level of 900 and is now doing a bit better in an induced come around 500. Apparently anything above 200 is bad.

Sounds like she may be having Hyperosmolar nonketotic hyperglycemia based on the high blood glucose levels (I'm assuming that's what the 900 is referring to). Or she may possibly have Diabetic Ketoacidosis.

It can be life-threatening. But I've treated a few people with these conditions in the ICU and they recovered rather nicely. So let's stay optimistic and hope for the best.

Update: She stayed in the coma longer than expected and is still in the ICU, but prograss has been very slow. Now she is slightly alert and has moved, blinked, smiled a little and her breathing tube should be removed tomorrow if all continues to go well. Doctors do not know the extent of the brain stem damage yet. Only time will tell.

If you can't / won't reply in a helpful manner, just say nothing. I'm a true atheist and what really sucks is that after punks like you get through your rebellious phase and start believing in your god or gods, I'll carry the stigma for crap like this.

Best wishes, and best of luck to Monique to pull out of this. 17 years old is way too young.
