Powerlifter Brandon Lilly breaks knee during 750lb squat

To be honest, this actually has merit. Utilization of anabolic steroids significantly reduces tendon strength and passive connective tissue resilience.

Moot point here, this was just a freak accident. With that much weight he should not have walked that out either. Damn shame, luv the guy, but he will probably never squat any significant weight ever again.

Please do explain.

Classy probably meant the meet should have used a monolift so you don't have to walk out with that much weight. I have no problems with walking out with the weight or monolift but obviously mono = safer and will up your max rep. Walking out is the traditional way, which isn't problem except they should have straps spotting the lift vs people trying to catch each end (not gonna happen with 750 lbs!). I think a lot of times the people running these meets get caught up in the big names like Lilly and think they're invincible when the fact of the matter is if you do it long enough, everyone will get injured at some point.

I have done a couple powerlifting meets using a mono. I was hoping you weren't going to post something along the lines of, "The human body can't withstand forces of such magnitude!@!"

I just didn't know the correct name of it. This was nothing but an accident, simple as that.

It's a trap!

I agree that this was likely a freak accident, definitely a bummer for his career. In some meets, walking the weight out is necessary.

Is there a reason that they don't use a cage with pins? He had to fall all the way down to the floor with that weight. And spotters were near worthless for that particular incident (not their fault, though...who can catch that kind of weight from dropping suddenly/unexpectedly?).

ouch that looked bad.

the day i broke my left ankle and sprained my right ankle at the same time i had been deadlifting 465lbs 5x5. i believe that was a major reason that i broke my ankle and sprained my other one at the same time. i was playing basketball and came down on 2 separate shoes of other people and rolled both ankles at the same time. not fun.

That is the whole purpose of having spotters. He was not spotted properly at all. Just got back from a meet this weekend, a local AAU meet, and everyone squatting over 400 or 500lbs had five spotters. The pic is not from the meet, but an example of properly spotting someone.

Accidents can happen but I would not have felt safe with spotters just loosely holding their hands under the bar.

Do steroidd actually reduce tendon strength or do the muscles simply outpace the tendons due to unnatural strength gains

some steroids such as Winstrol breaks down connective tissue, makes it less elastic. Also, steroids help your muscle recover quickly but the connective tissue can only recover so fast due to its limited blood supply. So yes muscle can outpace connective tissue. Also using steroids takes you to your absolute genetic limitations and tendon attachment sites are only so strong, add in age and eventually something has to give. Something is going to break. But thats the difference between fitness and sports. You want to win, you push the limit and do whatever it takes. If you want to look good and be as healthy as possible, the protocol is different.
