Powerbook G4

Well...im finally doing it. Switching over to the dark side. However i was planning on doing in a month or two...not just yet. I was at the computer store on campus and they have a deal that seems too good to pass up.

Powerbook G4 1.67 15" with 8xsuperdrive, 512mb ram, 64mb ati radeon, 80GB, and all the bells and whistles plus extended applecare warranty plus an epson c86 printer for 2000 + tax. Deal is only good till their stock runs out. As of this morning they had 117 in stock. You think i should jump on this deal now? Or just wait it out till i'm ready to buy.

I would wait buddy. I think the reason they are "what's available" is because updates are suppodedly expected to be here very soon. I'm sure the PB would be fast enough for your needs, but I would wait to see what the next month has to offer. Tiger comes out April 29th...and it requires more graphic memory than what a lot of Apples have. I am suspecting an update around that date. It would seem illogical to sell their new OS without the hardware to effectively push it.

The epson printer is one of those bait and hook deals. I think it is one that sucks up ink and is refill happy.

I highly doubt that apple is planning on releaseing a new powerbook any time soon. I would jump on the deal if you have the money that that's the machine you want. All current powerbooks (infact all aluminum powerbooks) are more than capeable of running Tiger. Check the apple web page for compatability... I'm fairly certain that even the older G4 powerbooks will work fine w/ Tiger.

$2000 isn't a bad deal for that machine. I would jump on it if I didn't have one already! It will be plenty fast for anything you need to do, and Tiger has promissed some nice improvements for productivity... and if you buy one now I'm fairly certain the upgrade to tiger in 2 weeks is either really cheap or free...

Apple JUST updated their powerbook line...they typically update 2x/year or so.

Jump on that deal, quick. Applecare alone is worth $300+, and the laptop $2299 retail.

cool....its all dependent on my acceptance to Columbia (which i should find out by the end of the weeK). If i get in....then I will definitely by it on my Amazon card and get somthing back in return =)

Agreed... go go go go go

Guess I am just optimistic...I'm waiting for the updates. Haha..and it has been said by a more reliable resource as a possiblity now. One that is getting sued for knowing "too much" from Apple. You could check out Apples "refurbs" too. Good prices on those.

Another question...they have less than 5 of the 1.5Ghz powerbooks for 1699 (compared to 1899 for the the 1.67). Is it worth it to get this and spend the extra 200 on another 512mb of ram? Or would it be better to get the 1.67?

Get the RAM OSX is a memory HOG. Makes windows XP look neat and efficient in comparison. To me the minimum to run OSX and actually get some work done (Photoshop CS Illustrator CS, etc.) is 1GB

Another $200 will easily buy you a 1gb stick of ram with plenty of room to spare... There was just a deal from outpost.com for a 1gb stick of pc2700 for $119 after $20 rebate (still selling it for $139). It's also known to be compatable with powerbooks. I personally have a 1.5ghz and find it plenty fast for my tastes. However, for the extra 200 I would probably go with the 1.67 b/c it has the superdrive. I'm not sure if their 1.5ghz 15" powerbooks have superdrives built in... you'll have to check on that. The 1.5ghz machines from the last rev (like mine) had them standard (but I opted to drop mine for the combo drive). The current 1.5ghz 15" machines come w/ a combo standard IIRC and the 1.67ghz 15" ers have the superdrive.

I would definitely jump on the superdrive machine. I really wish I would have kept the superdrive in mine. The next powerbook I will get will definitely be no expenses spared, not that this one was cheep, but I won't be dropping features like a dvd burner simply b/c I have an external one.

The G4s are plenty fast, RAM is much more important.

Unless of course you plan to put Linux or NetBSD on it 😉

actually, the new revision chips in the 'refreshed' laptops are REALLY slow. my brothers 800mhz g4 from an older tibook was BEATING this 1.667ghz g4 across the board. brother ran the test at home, and got scores from new powerbooks from a newsgroup who benchmarked display models at stores

Well..i got the 1.5 and it does have the old superdrive. I think i got a pretty good deal. $1954 out the door with applecare. Im going to get the Kingston 1gb chip for 139.99 (20 rebate is over). I can't get over how much i paid for this thing....hopefully itll be worth it. This is my first mac in nearly 10 years (had a IIsi).

Sounds like you made a good choice. I would definitely jump on kingston chip also... the guys at macnn have had good luck with them. I'm thinking of getting one to bump my powerbook up to 2gb. I'm sure you'll find that the machine is plenty worth it. I'm also not sure what the above poster was saying about an 800mhz G4 Ti book beating a new 1.67ghz book but I'm fairly certain that is complete and utter BS, weather he ment it to be or not (I'm assuming it was an error in the benchmarking or whatnot... possibly due to the 1.67ghz machine running on a reduced setting). The 1.67ghz chips in the new Al books are quite a bit faster than the 800mhz Ti books for anything/everything I've seen benchmarked.

That's hogwash. First of all, benchmarking a display model is a joke as it will likely be cluttered up with random crap slowing it down. And even then, I'm not seeing how your brothers g4 won any CPU test over a chip twice as fast.

Haha, it's a nice deal, but I'd definetely wait.

MacConference, anyone? Sif buy now. 'Sides, you won't get Tiger free that way....wait.

The up to date program for Tiger is $20 I think.

the store gave me a voucher for tiger upgrade....9.95 if you buy any mac hardware after april 12. I think im pretty happy with the choice. Anything newer would have set me back a few hundred to say the least. The only thing that kind of dissapoints me is the fact that the 1.5 uses 2x256 instead of 1x512 which will put me at 1256mb after the upgrade. Still plenty of ram, but im somewhat dissapointed at apple....

2 x 256 at least means it's probably running in dual channel (assuming Apples do that?), which is faster than 512 by itself 😛

No dual channel on the G4 machines AFAIK, but the G5 does have it
