It could have been a 34-year old mother with a young daughter. Instead it's a 84-year old line-cutter.

That woman, Mindy Crandell, 34, is not upset that her charitable gesture likely cost her an enormous fortune and says "things are meant to be for a reason."

Crandell, of Zephyrhills, Fla., was in line to purchase lottery tickets in Publix on May 18 while tending to one of her two daughters when Mackenzie, 84, stepped in front of her.

"My 10-year-old said, 'Mom, There's a lady in front of us.' I noticed that the lady was there. Didn't pay a lot of mind to it," Crandall said.

The lady at the counter stopped Mackenzie to allow Crandell to reclaim her spot in line. Crandell declined the offer and told Mackenzie "go ahead. " It was a move that could have potentially cost the Crandells the $590.5 million Powerball ticket. Mackenzie purchased one Quick Pick ticket and left the store.

This is what happens when you allow people, or the government for that matter, to walk all over you, you see what should have been yours vanish before your eyes.

Never let someone cut you in line, doesn't matter if they are old, or bigger and stronger than you. Fight for what is yours.

Quick Pick tickets let the lottery machine itself pick the numbers for you randomly. The OP is making the assumption that the winning ticket numbers would have come up on the next ticket regardless of when the ticket was produced.

If the machine picks randomly, whoever got the next random number would be the winner. Someone noted above that time could be used for the randomization algorithm, so it might not matter. One second(or fraction thereof) either way could change the number.

Yes I did make that assumption, but if she took her place in line, its highly likely that the neither would have won, still setting the universe in order.

It's possible that the government picks the winner based on facial recognition through the security cameras as well.

Lottery winners end up on a drug/alcohol fueled binge and lose all their money in 5 years. The 34 year old woman's young daughter would have ended up OD-ing by the age of 16.

How does the random quick pick generator work? If she argued with the lady about the spot in line, perhaps that would've been a long enough delay for the machine to have selected a whole new set of numbers for the 84 year old. Maybe she'll give her some money to help her out.
