Oh, and there is no entertainment with the lotto. It's just a waste of money. Scratch tickets are more fun, but still a waste. Gambling is just plain stupid. That's why the slot machine business is a multi-billion dollar industry.
Gambling is only stupid when the odds aren't in your favor or you can't handle the volatility.

Got mine, so for the next 48 hours I can debate whether I want a Ferrari or an Aston Martin. Then on Thursday I can rip them up and go back to work.

Good idea. That way if they do actually hit you can split the prize 20,000 ways with everyone else who thought they were being clever.

I got my first 3 PB tickets ever last friday, didn't win anything, but can't wait to buy more. Someone's gotta win, right? 😀

I won $7 because I had 3 correct numbers *1 red and 2 whites>. Three more numbers and I would have a very large party..lol.

I usually buy a few tickets whenever the jackpot gets big. The most I ever spent was $20.

IIRC, you can't buy lottery tickets online. Similar like you can't gamble online within the US territory. .

Yeah it's a pain in the ass having to go to the convenience store / gas station whenever you want to buy a lottery ticket.

Especially when that store is in another state (to get Powerball anyway).

What's the deadline on buying tickets for this particular drawing? As long as you buy 30 seconds before it's drawn or what? 😛

No, I think it closes 1 hour prior to drawing, forgot mine 🙁

Unless you own a casino...

I would never want anyone to know my name if I ever won something like that. Is it possible to set up some kind of dummy corporation, then have a lawyer pick it up for you?

The money would be nice, but all the losers coming out of the woodwork to hassle you 24/7 would be a PITA.

You can claim it in a blind trust, which is the smart way to claim any lottery winnings. If you ever win the lottery, your first call should be to a lawyer.

I wouldn't tell anyone I won either, outside of my spouse and my parents. I wouldn't tell my siblings and would instruct my parents not to either.

Properly invested, a prize like that could provide a constant flow of money and you'd never touch the original investment.

blind trust? how does that work?

i believe the lottery must release your name to prove that noone working for the lottery won.

As long as you don't have a rare or unique name, you should be safe to say you didn't win. I not only wouldn't tell anyone, I'd leave. I'd disappear like a ghost. Go on a vacation for a year then come back.

I'm not sure exactly. What happens is the lawyer sets up an account and claims the money as your agent and the funds go into the account, where you can do whatever you wish with them. Because of client confidentiality, the lawyer can't divulge the owner of the trust (you), so all the lottery agency (and the general public) know is that someone won the lottery in the area, but they don't know who.

I don't know much more than that because I don't play the lottery, so it's not something I need to worry about. In some investment books I have, that's always the default advice to people who win the lottery.

Edit: This happened near where I grew up recently. Someone won a fairly large lottery jackpot and claimed it via a blind trust. As far as I know, no one knows who it was.
