Power Plates

My girlfriend has gone to a couple of power plate sessions, i read up on how the thing is supposed to work, seems interesting.. Has anyone had any regular experience using this machine? Opinions?

It seems to me that, like most machines, it should be used only for special cases of injury, age, etc - not general fitness. Unless your girlfriend is fragile and needs vibrations to minutely strengthen her muscles, then I suggest she try something else, such as real things 😉
 
Haha! Well, she uses it as a supplement to the gym, obviously it has no cardio component. She says she could barely walk home after her first session and was in agony the next day so i guess it must be doing something, but hey, whatever makes her feel she's had a good workout!
 
I recall looking for info on vibration and how it helps w/bone density. This may be useful in building bone density. I remember reading an article about Roger Federer and how tennis players have higher bone density in the arm they use to swing their tennis racquet. So it seems like the power plate can be useful. Interesting, never heard of this before, looks like it could be useful as a rehab tool or for old/sedentary people who are physically incapable of immediately doing "normal" human exercise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhBKulu8HBU. I'd suggest weight lifting if your GF is interested in bone density and functional strength, I know it's not easy convincing women, I'm trying with my GF (going to get a bunch of research together first to prove the benefits to her and debunk the "BUT ILL GET HOOOOOUGE" thing).

Thats the problem isn't it.. The idea that they'll suddently grow loads of muscle before they realise it and end up looking like a man... Convince them otherwise and its easy to get them down! I love women who go to the gym and look fit.. Amateur level sprinters are the best! 😉
 
I've just been showing her CrossFit vids or videos of the smaller oly lifting girls who have tight bodies but aren't huge. I think I have her convinced weight lifting is the best way to go, but now the problem is she doesn't like the weight room at the gym (intimidation/newbie factor). I hope to bring her on off hours when there aren't 500 idiot undergrad curl monkies grunting and being idiots. Eventually I will get a home gym setup with a rack/platform, that will rule.
