It's been a while since I've seen a new IBM product.

What are they making/doing these days?

Mainframe, POWER systems, System X are far as processing go.

Disk Storage, SAN, Tape, Virtual Tape as far as storage type stuff.

Newest creation is the "Pure" systems. New and improved blade centers, basically.

They're also pushing software like there's no tomorrow.

Yeah, it's odd; IBM is possibly at the peak of its influence. They're just pulling the strings from behind the scenes now instead.

The power core was being used in a lot of BtoB items. I can't go into it just in case it opens up the few I know that did not get cut. But the problem is IBM was just milking the power groups and now there is not much left.

So toss out the people that made it and don't even give them their 401k match, let alone the pension they were promised when hired.

Here's a positive thought for ya to think about... I rolled the cash balance of my pension into an IRA when I quit IBM, and it's almost doubled in value over the past 5 years.

Yeah, I thought that IBM made most of their money off of software and consulting services now. Or maybe Ginni Rometty just told us that because we all worked in the business consulting arm back then :)

There is good money is selling expensive and overly complex business software, and then selling business consulting services when the customer can't get it running right!

same question here

Power core design, people I know still call it PowerPC or PowerPC Core/CPU. Most of the people let go today were in design and support. The writing has been on the wall as the work has dropped and new core designs were also dropped.

IBM was just getting every dollar out of the core design they could. People have been jumping ship to qualcomm and others for a while.

Server group still has some value so right now IBM is shopping it around.

Solutions. :D
I hate that word so much. Sometimes I'll click on it just to see what a company is trying to sell and it almost never makes sense.

paraphrase:
We offer business integration solutions for the dynamic cloud environment of tomorrow - today. Synergize the accounting with the shipping department to reduce overhead by up to 20% through dynamic vertical integration using database management fetching and caching. Call for pricing

Alright so you didn't say what you are selling nor did you say what it will cost. What an awesome product that must be.

Challenge: walk into any Wal-Mart and find a register that does not say IBM on it.

So IBM has canned just about everyone tied to the power PC design today. Server group is for sale from what I have been told as well.

I guess this is why they changed the 401k match last year. They laid off all the people and don't have to put money into that now.

No profanity in thread titles, even in OT.

POS is being sold to Toshiba.

Already Done. In fact, Toshiba is already getting their names into the software. My point was, the largest retailer in the US chose to purchase hardware and software from IBM for every one of their stores. Several other chains have done the same. And Toshiba paid handsomely for it.

IBM is just continuing their strategy of going after the profit.

I dunno how "already done" it is. It's a done deal, but it's not a completed deal yet.

Indeed, Walmart purchased IBM registers. But IBM doesn't service them. Which is what Toshiba purchased as well, service.

Sort of. Most of these go through 2-3 levels of service from other companies before they make it to Toshiba.

There's no sort of. IBM does not service Walmarts registers. Who knows, maybe Toshiba can win the contract.

IBM does not announce things like this anymore, heck they stopped giving head counts a long time ago since they were exporting jobs left and right.

News is just from those that work inside. I know, well knew, several people that worked inside. I still know at least 1 that did not get cut, yet.

Um, I don't think you understand how this whole thing works, but that's ok. And I never said IBM (Toshiba) services anything. When needed, they do provide the answers for others to do so.
