Ohio.

Damn the power just came back on here about an hour ago.

6.5 hours or so without electricity.

Talk about unsettling.

We have power cuts over here all the time....we just shrug and carry on....why is everyone over there panicking and going mental....like buying all the ice up because there is no air-con.

It's like nowadays every kind of widescale problem is assumed to be a terrorist attack.

You on a lappy or something?

Oh by the way, fun fact: phone lines carry power, although not very much. Something like 16 volts at 50mA or something. (They calculate long distance by how much voltage and amperage you draw to connect) You might be able to google for it.

While the phone line does have power, it has nothing to do with the cost. The distance your analog phone signal goes before getting digitized and multiplexed to be carried on the same 2 wires as tons of other calls is the same when you call your next door neighbor as it is when you call the other side of the world.

BTW, one last thing I want to add - VERIZON r0x0rs. While my other friends cell phone service wasn't working, I was able to get in contact with other people throughtout the blackout in NYC/LI area yesterday with Verizon cell service to make sure they were doing ok.

Yep, but I don't think the water pumping stations are back yet. :( Atleast I get a minimum of 4 hours off work today.

I got power back about 2 am. Didn't realize it was still out.

Those posting from blackout sections, what are you doing? Dialing into a west-coast ISP? :p

I live in Oceanside on Long Island and got my power back at 7:30 PM last night. I live near a LIPA plant so I guess that it help. My in-laws live a mile away and didn't get their power back until 9AM this morning. They say that only 50% of LongIsland has their power back.
