Just saw the preview of Powell being interviewed by Bawba Walters. The snippet was....

BW: Do you believe that there was a connection between Saddam and al Qaeda?

CP: Not that I have seen.

This should be good. Can't wait to see the rest of Powell clearing his conscience.

"One of the greatest Americans ever"- for a sellout. Too bad he didn't resign on the eve of the invasion of iraq, come clean about the lies and distortions before the fact, rather than after...

Everyone makes mistakes, not that many people admit to them.

Colin Powell is one of the better members of the Bush Administration.

Agreed. Did anyone catch the Daily Show when he was the guest? That was one of the best episodes I've ever seen.

Powell is a great and moral man, for a politician.

Don't turn him into superman just yet. There are darker corners to every corner. Powell was burnt and is now finally venting now that the 800 pound gorilla - the GOP mob mentality - has a severe black eye due to both Katrina and the negative stories on everything FEMA/Bush of late. The floodgates might be opening against the GOP from within. Remember, this wasn't a popular war for anyone but the president. He forced alot of favours to get it done. People expected a return for the favours and now Bush is losing any possible clout he had to return those favours.

The last two words in your post have tarnished him forever.. His God will Judge him based on his lies to start this war...

When he walked into his office after the UN speech and told his chief of staff "I wonder how people will feel when we drop 1/2 million troops into Iraq, march from one end of the country to the other, and find absolutely nothing?!?"

I wonder if he felt, at that tiime, that everything he told the UN Council was truthful?

Yeah, but I'm not sure, "Oops! I'm sorry." cuts it when the cost is thousands of lives, trillions of dollars or debt and bad relations with the rest of the planet.

I'd have respected him more if he'd stood up and called it what it was before they started shooting. :(

yeah, if would have said something before...he would be a better man. As it is right now though, I still respect him.

I'm looking forward to this 20/20 special.

Powell is not a member of the administration. He was. He played a critical role in launching the war in Iraq. He knew exactly what he was doing and who he was doing it for. Someone with the experience and contacts that Powell has had to know that the Iraq invasion was pure scam. He should have resigned before making total fool of himself in front of the UN security council.

I have very little respect for the man. He should be ashamed to show his face. That's what he gets for doing George Bush's bidding.

it wouldnt have done any good
he saw that the US was heading into war, whatever he would do would not change that

but right now is his moment, the war in iraq is at a stand still basicly, the handling of new orleans is a disaster, its time to put everything in context

Powell made a huge mistake, but he is a better man for admitting it (well we will have to wait a bit more to see what more he has to say). Admitting your own mistakes and showing you learned from them is a sign of a great character. Ignoring your own mistakes is probably one of the worst character flaws people can have.

i love how you guys are so sure he knew at the time he was making the case for the war to the U.N. that he knew there were inaccuraces in the intelligence reports in front of him.
i don't think he knew at that time.

hindsight now is 20/20.

He might not have, but the above quote to his chief of staff after the speech is sure damning!

Enough people in this forum knew, if Powell didn't know that's pretty pathetic.

I didn't know and I mistakenly believed that the Administration was honest and competent enough to make sure there was before invading Iraq. I won't make that mistake again.

i'm with you. i believed what the intelligence reports were saying. it's too bad so many people doubt that the President couldn't have believed just the same.
