[Poughkeepsie Journal]150 to 200 IBM staff move to GlobalFoundries

Or, it could be IBM offloading POWER8 to GlobalFoundries. It could also be IBM putting up a reference OpenPower design at GlobalFoundries as well.

POWER7+ was largely IBM and GlobalFoundries Fab 8.

The are fab workers, not design engineers. This is a way to avoid laying off IBM employees in the fishkill fab for a while since the fab utilization is very low at this time.

There is a 2hr commute involved, not ideal. So who would take that job? Anyone who realizes they don't have a job if they don't take it.

Obviously the one's who prove their mettle in GF's fab will be offered relo packages and permanent position in GF. The one's who don't, well there's a whole website for ex-IBMers to commiserate together over their career paths post-IBM.

Yikes, remind me not to work for them.

Many graduates from my alma mater go to work for IBM and they seem to be quite happy there.

I'd imagine that for cheap, freshly graduated talent IBM is a great place to gain some experience and credibility...but once you're a more senior person and cost more, that's when the "no revenue growth, grow earnings by cost cutting" monster gets you.

Nah, its not like that. IBM is a great company to work for, just be smart about owning your career path development while working for them. If you are a Wally (Dilbert reference) then you will find yourself sans job.

If you are industrious AND smart about which business unit you work within, then you have a shot at raking in millions in compensation over the course of your career.

The point is don't expect IBM to give you life on a silver platter just because you convinced them to hire you. If you want that then go work for Google or Apple 😉

Working for IBM isn't the same as being employed as an individual by a company; you will get regular work hours, a regular schedule, and the pay will reflect the convenience of the job.
Or you can go be a techie somewhere, live on coffee and donuts, and pull 25h shifts when the production line machines break down.

(i work at ibm)
