This is not a fanboy thread. I do not hate Apple, they offer some slick ass design and nice screens.

One thing I notice... where the FUCK is the maximize key? You always view browsers in a half screen or any size that seems to be completely whimsical when you click on the green + key?

This is truly annoying and I do not understand what purpose this serves other than to waste precious desktop real estate space.

It's Apple. It understands that you only want a partial window. Don't worry about what you think you want, the almighty Apple knows better.

lol- that's one of the things that annoyed me too when using a mac- I've only used one a few times though, and I'm sure there's a way to maximize it.

Yeah, that kind of gets to me on my iBook. Fortunately, when I launch Camino it remembers that I had dragged the window to fullscreen. I do with Apple would include that as an option in system preferences...

Many people buy Apples because they think they're not "feeding" the man by not buying msft products. However you have to buy almost everything from Apple on a Apple system, all the parts and a lot of the software - it's like a monopoly in itself.

there is no "maximize" key in the Windows sense. The green button (the rightmost one in the top left of the window if colors are disabled) resizes the window to either the "user state" (ie window size as set by by user) or the "standard state" (coded by developer, can change based on window contents).

This button is often not implemented properly per Apples user guidelines. For example, in Firefox for OS X pressing the zoom button maximizes the brower window like in Windows OS.

In any case, I would like it better if it was a "maximize" button too. And if there was an option to cascade windows, sort of like expose does, but keep the windows usable.

I haven't turned on my Intel Imac in months...know why? It sucks balls. Apple belongs in the oven.

I love when Apple fanboys call this a "feature" and you will appreciate it as you use it more. I recently purchased a used Mac laptop and while I like it, this is one thing I do not like. Ok, add your "feature" but that doesn't mean take away another one. Add a 4th button! Doesn't always kill to have MORE options. If I don't want to get used to your crap then I won't. Just leave me pissed off. That is real smart, Apple.

Why did you buy one? Or better yet, why don't you just put Windows on it?

I got it for free... I never got around to installing anything on it. It literally sits doing nothing. I have to support Macs at work, so I figured I'd keep it around for those few times I can't figure something out.

Thank you! I thought it was only me. I have a fucking mac at work and can someone please tell me how to maximize Word so it is fullscreen please? I'm sure you can, but it's not obvious and it is driving me nuts! At the moment it only takes up half the screen.

I kinda like their cascade button. I think its F9? It arrays the window across the desktop and you click the one you want.

OP - to answer your question, there is no "Maximize" feature in Mac OS X. Wonderful Pork's explanation was correct. UI design has always been somewhat different on Macs and PCs, and people who have used one for any length of time will find some things to be strange when moving to the other. Window sizing is one of those differences. Don't look now, but the dock doesn't work exactly like the Windows taskbar either. ;) If the differences bother you to the point of using profanity, obviously you should stick with Windows.

Expose... a great feature that I wish MS would copy. I've tried add-ons to get that functionality in Windows, but it's not as good. I think it needs to be built in to the OS.

Yep. It's why I gave up on OS X after a week.

My applications maximizes to the whole screen. I also prefer the expose, which brings all of my windows in front of me to choose. With the taskbar, it gets really cluttered and then they tile all programs in a box that I have to read the title to know which one I want. I like seeing my windows to choose (I never use alt+tab anymore).

I still hate the whole Command+Arrow to do "Home" and "End" though.

Press the Macbook Wheel on the top and bottom at the same time, then "turn" the wheel twice. BOOM, maximized.
