After some thought,it was a tough choice but my game of the year has to be Max Payne for the PC.I couldnt put this game down and felt compelled to finsh it completely without using cheats.The Bullet time was one of the most fun innovations ever.The non stop action kept it fresh...making Max Payne IMO the most kick arse game of 2001.

Only game i played, starcraft broodwars... < numero uno in my book... since its the only game in my book...

Diablo 2 LOD was awesome...

I don't think it has much chance... but I love Stronghold... can't get enough of that game

If I had to pick 1, I'd say Grand Theft Auto 3. The levels are huge, tons of missions, tons of side missions, and hours and hours of other things to do in this game. There is just so much packed into this one.

I can see why some people would rate Max Payne that highly. Its very enjoyable.

For me I play GT3 more, so thats my game of the year, with Maxy Payne somewhere nearby.

I agree 100%. Max Payne is one of the best games I have ever played. Consistent throughout, much harder at the end of the game. I loved the end sequence, the best ending I've seen in a game as long as I can remember. Really tied up the loose ends.

BTW, can we get GTA3 for the PC? I have seen a few of the commercials, but it looked like they were advertising only for PS2......

sorry, but max payne may be pretty, and may be good for a while, but its the same thing... over and over.

Agreed. The graphics and authentic engine sounds on GT3 on PS2... incredible.

My favorite right now is Halo, with Grand Theft Auto 3 and MGS2 both following close behind.

I love the feeling you get from Halo, you actually feel like you're there with your marines killing aliens. Good storyline, co-op mode, and a fun multi-player (deathmatch, etc...) experience round out the game to make it one of my favorite games of all time.

Max payne is a close second, but you can only take so much of NY crime fighting...

Max Payne. Even though it was not original in its concept (ripping off movies/games from The Matrix to Deus Ex), and the voice talent and graphic novels were laughable, the gameplay was solid and the graphics were pretty amazing. I also appreciated the 'simulated high' sequences

some real winners this year. i do pc only so i cant really name any console ones as i dont have any first hand experience
my tops are, in no particular order:

Operation Flashpoint (i know i'll be playing this one in coop multiplayer for years, no game in its genre comes close to what it offers in multi)
Max Payne (just fun as hell for some reason)
Hitman (sleeper hit imo, i absolutely loved this game. so many ways to beat a mission, and was just down right a well made game)

other notable games include Ghost Recon and Civilization 3 (which is nothing more than civ1 and 2, but still great )

Operation Flashpoint

Multiplayer in OFP is what makes me love this game. I'll be playing this game for years to come based off of it. If I were to go to a single player game I really liked, I would go with:

Tropico
Wolfenstein
Max Payne

For consoles, it would be:

Capcom Vs. SNK 2 (DC)
Puzzle Fighter 2 (DC)
Halo
Metal Gear Solid 2
Gran Turismo 3
