and there's a laptop slot in between your back and the rest of the backpack. it fits my point-and-shoot's battery charger, iPod, ThinkPad X61t with extended battery, and still has wiggle room for a few magazines.
for travel I attach the SB-800 in its pouch to the exterior of the backpack and normally don't take the 24-85mm, which gives me room for laptop/iPod/phone chargers and two eyeglasses cases for airplane travel. furthermore I can tuck my over-ear headphones up under the center of the lid.
for backpacking I take almost everything out (battery grip, card readers, chargers, other unneeded accessories), leaving only the lenses and filters that I will need. this leaves quite a lot of room for food and water bottles and lightens up the pack considerably. plus all the attachment loops on the sides.
